Warning: spoilers ahead for The Last of Us episode 8.
From Melanie Lynskey’s brutal rebel leader Kathleen to the Clickers and Bloaters that now wander the post-apocalyptic globe, The Last of Us has had its fair share of terrifying villains.
But, the appearance of David (Scott Shepherd), who encounters Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as she is frantically attempting to save her father figure Joel, pushes things to a whole new level of awful (Pedro Pascal).
Despite Ellie’s weapon pointing at him, David speaks gently at first, assuring her that he is from a large tribe and may give her with sanctuary.
Nevertheless, much as in the video game, it is revealed that David is considerably more than meets the eye, as he turns out to be one of the most heinous villains introduced thus far.
Who is David in episode 8 of The Last of Us?
When David first meets Ellie, he tells her that he was a teacher before the Cordyceps pandemic.
It wasn’t until the apocalypse that he became a preacher and eventually became the head of a group of people.
During their conversation, David tells Ellie that he knows she’s with a guy since Joel murdered a member of his organisation.
Ellie obtains the medicine that David promised her, running back to Joel to deliver the cure to the wound that has left him battling for his life.
As Ellie hears David and his companions scouring the area the next day, she tries to direct them away from Joel, which leads to her own imprisonment.
When incarcerated in the resort where David’s society is housed, the adolescent learns the horrible discovery that they are cannibals, but only a handful are aware that the flesh they consume comes from humans.
David tries to persuade Ellie to be his ‘equal’ in leading the community, but she fights back, shattering his fingers and stabbing his right-hand man James (Troy Baker) in the throat when they try to pin her on a table to murder her.
Ellie starts a fire in the dining room while David sinisterly searches for her, eventually slicing him to death before being reunited with Joel, who tortures and kills David’s men in order to figure out where they’d taken her.
