With so many options on television these days, it’s difficult to know where to begin. But don’t worry, we’ve compiled a list of the finest to spare you the trouble of doing it yourself.
This week’s lineup includes a Netflix comedy sketch programme and the return of a helmeted space hero on Disney+.
A Whole Lifetime With Jamie Demetriou is the star of Stath Lets Flats’ new sketch programme. In other news, Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian enters its third season.
Here are this week’s best TV shows to watch:
Disney+
Abbott Elementary
A warm welcome back for the staff at struggling Philadelphia Abbott Elementary – that’s Abbott Primary in UK parlance – in a comedy that takes a simple, tried and tested format and plays it with class. We’re in mockumentary land as the hard-pressed teachers, led by naive Janine (Quinta Brunson, the show’s creator) battle to keep their heads above water. The humour is both sweet and sharp, the message life-affirming but rarely sentimental.
Series two, episodes one to ten available today.
Disney+
The Mandalorian
In The Last Of Us, he’s clutching on for his life, but here Pedro Pascal appears less vulnerable, encased in the magnificent armour of his titular character as this Star Wars spin-off zooms into series three orbit. Is this or Andor the franchise’s best addition? Space nerds, you may argue about it till the electronic sheep weave their own cardigans.
Episode one available today.
Prime
Daisy Jones & The Six
Until we receive an exposé of the shenanigans that undoubtedly fueled S Club 7’s rise to popularity, here’s the next best thing: a rock mockumentary tracking Daisy Jones & The Six’s bitching and partying as they tore up the charts in the 1970s, starring, left, Camila Morrone and Sam Claflin. Unfortunately, they did not exist – this is a dream – but Riley Keough is fantastic as the fearless Daisy. Episodes one through three will be available on Friday.
Netflix
A Whole Lifetime With Jamie Demetriou
Where you stand on this sketch show will depend on where you stand on Stath Lets Flats, because Jamie Demetriou has a scattershot humorous imagination that hits and fails. But when he hits, he’s hilarious. Now available.
