This week’s Grand Designs viewers were underwhelmed for a very specific reason.
In the most recent episode of the long-running series, retired furniture maker Lucinda, who has had a lifelong love affair with wood, revealed her goal to create a whole house out of the material in South Herefordshire.
Her intention was to build a two-story, high-insulated, low-impact home in the woods above the old family home where her children grew up.
She had challenges along the road, as she had to find out how to get materials through the woods without hurting roots or plants, as well as how to build a building without using heavy machinery.
There were even worries that columns created for the mansion might ‘explode,’ but they were able to avert calamity.
But, towards the conclusion of the programme, viewers at home were disappointed because Lucinda revealed she was taking her time to ensure she completed the project to the quality she intended.
While the building was complete, the majority of the inside of the house was still vacant, with just drawings for a mezzanine visible.
Viewers were dissatisfied because they had waited to watch how the project came together, only to be disappointed with an unfinished structure.
Many people quickly expressed their opinions on social media.
‘Right that’s it I’m not watching Grand Designs again! Another week and another unfinished project!’ one person posted on X, formerly Twitter.
‘Another week. Another shed,’ someone else lamented.
Another added: ‘Nothing more annoying than an unfinished house when the programme ends.’
Meanwhile, many viewers stated that they would be content to wait until projects were completed.
‘Why does Grand Designs show such a wonderful but half-finished house? The lack of interior detracts from such wonderful craftsladyship. We’re happy to wait for the finished article!’ a viewer explained.
Their outrage comes after viewers last week chastised a couple for making unique tiles for their home, with the vibrant pattern prompting some to suggest they should have bought them from a local DIY store.
Graeme, an architect, and his German partner Melanie travelled to Marrakech to design and select tiles for their garage plot conversion.
Many viewers, however, were not lovers of the red and blue colour scheme, with some saying that the pair should have just gone to B&Q instead of travelling overseas.
After going over budget and running out of cash, their episode finished with an incomplete project due to their inability to complete the improvements.
Grand Designs continues Wednesdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
