Vicky Pattison went on a modern-day catholic pilgrimage, which altered her outlook on faith.
Vicky used the journey, which was filmed for BBC’s Pilgrimage: The Road Through Portugal, to ruminate on her own connection with a higher force.
‘I think I’ve come out feeling like I would like to have something to believe in properly,’ she explained.
The 35-year-old has started to ponder if faith can provide her with more contentment and guidance in her daily life.
‘I’ve never been sure about anything in my life, wondering if I am living my life the right way, all these silly questions constantly run through my head and it’s just exhausting.’
Vicky, who has been outspoken about her mental health issues, was especially intrigued by the views of her co-stars, mathematician Bobby Seagull and comedian Nabil Abdulrashid.
‘In every walk of life, Bobby and Nabil are different. But they have [faith] in common.’
‘Even though their religions are distinct, it doesn’t matter,’ the reality star, who rose to prominence on Geordie Shore, added. I believe it gives you peace, calm, and solace. They simply appear to have it worked out.’
‘I reckon it’s made me far more open to the idea of finding a religion. I’d love to have the sort of thing that they’ve got.’
Su Pollard, Rita Simons, Shane Lynch, and Millie Knight also accompanied Vicky on the journey.
For 14 days, the celebs travelled along Portugal’s Northern Way. They walked, drove, and took the railway for 226 miles before landing at the renowned Sanctuary in Fatima. The site has religious importance because three local shepherd children claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in 1917.
Vicky described the entire experience as “emotional,” and she was shocked by the parts she found difficult.
‘I was expecting it to be really physically tough but actually, the thing I struggled with most was the emotional highs and lows, thinking about my lack of faith, really, and whether I’ve been missing something.’
‘It was an amazing experience,’ she concluded.
Pilgrimage: The road through Portugal will be on Fridays at 9pm on BBC Two & BBC iPlayer from 7 April 2023.
