This Is Going To Hurt has won a resounding chorus of praise among viewers following the series’ launch on BBC One, with audiences commending Ben Whishaw on his incredible performance and dubbing the adaptation of Adam Kay’s book the best TV they’ve seen ‘in a long time’.
The first episode of the drama, which is available to watch on BBC iPlayer, introduces viewers to Adam, who works in an obs and gynae NHS ward in a hospital.
It opens with the exhausted doctor waking up after passing out in his car in the hospital car park, before coming across a pregnant woman in labour outside who he has to rush in for a Caesarean section.
From having to constantly change his scrubs after being covered in blood to making life-or-death decisions while sleep deprived, the show depicts Adam’s experience of being a doctor in brutal detail, leaving many people watching in awe.
‘Ben Whishaw in #ThisIsGoingToHurt – I have no words. Perfect casting of Adam. He is sublime in everything he’s in – such a talent,’ one person tweeted about the James Bond and Paddington actor.
‘Ben Whishaw utterly mesmerising as usual,’ someone else said, while another wrote: ‘Stunning performance from #BenWhishaw.’
Several people said that in their view, the adaptation was one of the best pieces of television they’ve seen in a long time.
‘#ThisIsGoingToHurt is the best 50 minutes of TV I’ve seen for a long time. Well done to all involved,’ one person wrote.
‘#ThisIsGoingToHurt is as breathtaking and witty an emotional roller coaster as the original book. It has the same sense of being really funny until it’s not,’ another said.
Someone else wrote: ‘#ThisIsGoingToHurt absolutely nailed it. Best programme I’ve watched in forever.’
‘#ThisIsGoingToHurt probably some of the best tele in a long time,’ another stated.
There are seven episodes in total for This Is Going To Hurt, with other cast members including Harriet Walter, Alex Jennings and newcomer Ambika Mod.
With Adam recently announcing a follow-up novel, which will follow his life after leaving the medical profession, it’ll be curious to see whether the BBC decides to commission an adaptation of the follow-up with Ben reprising the role.
This Is Going To Hurt returns next Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
