The day many The Witcher fans have been both anticipating and dreading has finally arrived.
Not only is Season 3 Volume 2 of the series now available on Netflix, but it also marks the final appearance of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The end of an era marked by grey hair, baths, and an amusingly scary snarl.
Since 2019, the actor has completely embodied the monster hunter from head to toe as his unpredictable journey saw him take on an unexpected role, becoming a father figure to his surrogate daughter Ciri (Freya Allan) as his romance with sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) took passionate twists and turns.
Henry has bowed out ahead of Season 4, which will see Liam Hemsworth take up the lead role, by giving Geralt every ounce of his energy before passing over the keys.
In the second volume, the final episodes of the season are divided into three unique chapters that push the boundaries of fan-favorite characters and the actors that play them.
While there is a lot going on – which may be tough to keep up with at times – at the heart of the story, we have Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri experiencing very stormy individual journeys as they are forced to fend for themselves rather than inside their old family unit.
Let’s start with the man everyone is talking about, and who fans are already missing now that his time as Geralt is over.
We can only imagine how disappointed fans would have been if Henry hadn’t been able to demonstrate his great fighting prowess in his last episodes, given that members of the team behind the scenes agreed that he’s pretty well proficient enough to be a stuntman in his own right.
So don’t worry, you’ll have your share of murderous moments… But brace yourself for some of the most heinous brutality and bone-crunching injuries witnessed in The Witcher over the previous four years.
Henry’s final scenes with his castmates have a bittersweet resonance to them given that we know they were his last before his departure.
With some of the language, it’s easy to assume that they all knew about Henry’s departure before the rest of the world did, despite the fact that the news came months after production had finished.
Freya, who was a teenager when she was cast as Princess Cirilla in The Witcher, has gone through a transformational journey comparable to her role in the years following.
In one episode of season three’s last installment, the 21-year-old is forced to operate mostly on her own in a vast desert… She genuinely succeeds in this role, digging into Ciri’s inner desperation to create a beautifully fascinating performance.
Freya has been a strong presence on the show since its inception, and she came into her own even more in season two, when Ciri was schooled in the ways of the witchers in Kaer Morhen.
However, having obtained direction from Yennefer on how to learn to use her power and manage her Chaos, the princess must now determine if she has what it takes to do it without the constant supervision of her parental figures.
In season three, explosive action is matched with poignant dialogues between characters such as on-again, off-again pair Yennefer and Geralt, as well as the bard Jaskier (Joey Batey) and Prince Radovid (Hugh Skinner), laying the groundwork for the future fourth season.
So, what is in store for The Witcher in the future?
Liam has big shoes to fill, and we’re interested to see how he makes Geralt his own, even though some fans have threatened to boycott the show now that Henry has departed.
Henry’s final moments may have been anticlimactic… However, no one was ever going to be completely pleased with the way his final moments played out, especially since his leaving announcement came after production was completed.
With great protagonists like Freya and Anya still on board, The Witcher has more than enough talent to keep generating gripping TV, even if it continues to irritate dedicated fans of the novels and video game franchise.
All that is to be said is… ride, Witcher, ride!
