The Responder star Martin Freeman has spoken about his preparation for the highly-anticipated new series, saying he spoke to himself ‘spoke to himself in scouse’ for an entire year and a half.

The BBC comedy-drama will see The Office and Sherlock star retell the real-life story of former first responder Tony Schumacher, and the events he witnessed while on dut.

The series was shot on the streets of Liverpool, and one of the biggest talking points is Martin’s Liverpudlian accent in the role.

The actor spoke to Metro.co.uk about his preparations for the new show, saying that he ‘followed his ear’ when it came to finding the right dialect.

‘I didn’t watch anything [to take inspiration],’ he said, adding: I have spent a lot of time in Liverpool in my life. Talking to people in the city and talking to people to Tony was part of it.’

Martin added: ‘I walked around for a year and a half, occasionally just talking to myself in scouse. Even though you’re not always the best judge of your own thing, I do trust my ear.

‘If I say something, I know when it sounds off. I got very, very exact about that stuff. You have to be, because if I don’t do it well, it’s a terrible accent to get wrong.

‘There are some accents where you don’t want to be in that city among the inhabitants of that city making a balls up of it,’ the actor said.

The upcoming series, written by the real Schumacer, sees the character on a string of six night shifts – each evening covering one episode.

The series focuses on Martin’s character, who must tackle his own marital problems and mental health issues all the while trying to remain focused on his duty.

Speaking about writing the series, Tony said he wanted to bring something different to the concept of police dramas.

‘I didn’t want to write a police drama,’ he said. ‘I wanted to write a people drama. I didn’t want to write about the police, because the minute that you do that, you’ve immediately got to start walking down corridors with coffee and write all that “the tape is beginning now” stuff.’

He added: ‘What I wanted to do was to keep it out to the police station as much as we could. It’s about being the human being wearing the uniform – not being a cop. So I want to make it as little as possible about being a police officer.’

The likes of Ian Hart (The Terror), and MyAnna Buring (The Salisbury Poisonings), Kerrie Hayes (Tin Star), Warren Brown (Luther), David Bradley (Harry Potter) and Rita Tushingham (Ridley Road) also star in the new series.

The Responder will air on BBC One on January 24.
