After a lengthy delay, fans will finally get to see Naomi Alderman’s award-winning book The Power transformed for the big screen.
The 2016 sci-fi book received the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction and created quite a stir among readers when it imagined every girl and woman in the world abruptly being granted the ability to electrocute people at will.
Alderman imagines the global and far-reaching repercussions of a sudden power shift, told from numerous points of view by characters from the United Kingdom, the United States, Eastern Europe, and Nigeria.
The Power TV series was revealed in 2019, but faced a number of setbacks, including a newly-signed abortion legislation in Georgia, where it was to be shot, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Leslie Mann’s withdrawal from the production, which was substituted by Toni Collette.
The series is officially available on Amazon Prime, and here’s everything you need to know about the major characters and who plays them.
Toni Collette – Margot Cleary-Lopez
Toni Collette portrays ruthless politician Margot Cleary-Lopez, who develops a strong desire for power once her ability is turned on. Margot, the Mayor of Seattle, combines her political ambitions with her plans to train younger females once they gain control. She has three children as well.
Toni has previously appeared in films such as The Sixth Sense, Hereditary, and Little Miss Sunshine.
Halle Bush – Allie Montgomery
Halle Bush makes her starring début as one of The Power’s most significant characters. She portrays Allie Montgomery, an orphaned adolescent girl who is abused by her foster parent until she gets authority.
Allie’s voyage takes her across the United States, where she is adopted as a cult-like religious figure responsible for females who, like her, have been cast out.
Ria Zmitrowicz – Roxy Monke
Roxy Monke, a Londoner and the daughter of ruthless gang boss Bernie, is played by Ria Zmitroqicz. Roxy had been an outcast her entire life, having been born as the result of an adultery and reared by her father to her father’s ongoing loathing of her stepmother, and unable to gain appropriate regard in her father’s dubious company.
When her authority enters the picture, the power dynamic is flipped. Ria has previously featured in lesser ventures such as television and film.
Toheeb Jimoh – Tunde Ojo
Toheeb Jimoh portrays Tunde Ojo, a Nigerian videojournalist who uses his camera to document the rise in power of women around the globe. He is the first to record a woman using her energy and travels the world to share video of how the power is changing the world, despite the fact that it places him in danger.
Toheeb has previously featured in Ted Lasso, as well as BBC and stage plays.
Zrinka Cvitešić – Tatiana Moskalev
Zrinka Cvitei portrays dictator Tatiana Moskalev, who joins the story as the wife of Moldova’s president and soon seizes control. Tatiana establishes a new nation named Bessapara, which rapidly devolves into bloodshed.
Zrinka is a Croatian actress who has previously featured in the British drama Capital and Woody Harrelson’s Lost In London.
Eddie Marsan – Bernie Monke
Bernie Monke, Roy’s father and the dreaded leader of a London criminal syndicate, is played by Eddie Marsan.
Along with Roxy, Bernie has three kids with whom he works to develop his crime business until Roxy surpasses them all.
Bernie is best recognised for his role as Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes series, which he shared with Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr.
Auli’i Cravalho – Jos Cleary-Lopez
Auli’i Cravalho portrays Jos Cleary-Lopez, Margot’s daughter and the first in her family to gain her abilities.
She is disturbed by her sudden power and fights to keep it, creating conflict with her mother.
Auli’i is best recognised for her part as Moana, the popular Disney character she voiced.
John Leguizamo – Rob Lopez
Rob Lopez, another member of the Cleary-Lopez family and Margot’s spouse, is played by John Leguizamo.
As a loving husband and parent, he ultimately struggles with the power that his wife and children have acquired.
John has appeared in a number of television programmes and films, including the critically praised When They See Us and The Menu.
