During a family day out, The One Show host Alex Jones unknowingly snuck a one-armed monkey out of a zoo in a bag.
The BBC television personality, 45, and her husband Charlie Thomson, as well as their young son Edward, were visiting The London Zoo in Regent’s Park a few years ago when the bizarre occurrence occurred.
Recounting Alan Davies’ odd story: As Still Untitled, Alex informed her other guests that it all started when the monkey, fittingly called Bandit, saw the diaper bag resting beneath the pram.
‘I think there must have been a banana or something hanging out,’ she says, in a clip ahead of Friday’s episode.
‘So, he jumps in, and this flipping monkey… rooted through, rooted through and we couldn’t get him out.’
Despite her husband’s best efforts, Alex was adamant on keeping the monkey in the bag.
‘I was like “I’m not leaving him, there’s monkey DNA all over my baby, I’m not leaving him in the changing bag, disgusting, germy”,’ she recalls.
The monkey eventually got out of the sack with the aid of a zookeeper and a stick of fruit… or so they thought.
‘[We] made our way back to the car and just as we went to leave the zoo, heard something,’ Alex continues.
‘When we were saying our thanks, the monkey had jumped back in, and we nearly took him home. There he was looking up at me with his teeth bared.
‘We had to go all the way back with Bandit in the bag.’
Indeed, Alex put an end to Bandit’s magnificent escape to freedom.
As Yet Untitled airs Tuesdays at 10pm on Dave.
