Midge (Rachel Brosnahan), as seen in the teaser for the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is more driven than ever to make it big on the comedy circuit.
The housewife-turned-comedian has had her fair share of highs and lows thus far, rebuilding her career from scratch last season after being removed as a support act on singer Shy Baldwin’s tour due to a near-the-knuckle remark.
Midge concluded the fourth season by stating she will no longer be a supporting performer, having clawed her way back up the filthy entertainment industry totem pole.
Ahead of the April 14 release on Amazon Video of the Emmy-winning show, it appears that she is sticking to her guns.
But, although the perfectly dressed Midge is closer than ever to the success she has always desired, she is realising that closer is still so far away.
‘I want a big life, I want to break every single rule there is,’ she says in the trailer voiceover as she’s seen plugging away on the live circuit, with her name high on the bill, after gazing longingly at a billboard advert for The Gordon Ford Show.
‘It’s two steps forward, three steps aback and I’m tired of it,’ she later vents to manager Susie (Alex Borstein), frustration never far from the surface.
‘This is it, this is the break,’ Susie assures her in reply as they talk backstage on a TV set.
It definitely appears to be the truth, given Susie Myerson and Associates’ ‘busy, professional’ office expansion and the influx of new clients and pets (including a llama, naturally).
Midge’s quirky parents, portrayed by Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle, don’t appear to be having a good time, as evidenced by a burnt-out flat building and Tony Shalhoub’s Abe’s lament, “We seem to be having terrible luck.”
There are also glimpses of Midge’s ex-husband and co-parent Joel (Michael Zegen), as well as Milo Ventimiglia, who returns to reprise his anonymous cameo role from Midge’s one-morning stand in the previous season.
While not shown in the video, fan favourite Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) returns as Midge’s almost-lover and a real-life tragic comic figure with undying faith in her.
Notable returning collaborators with showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino include Kelly Bishop, who reprises her role as a social matron and matchmaker in New York City.
Midge says at the end of the clip, triumphantly set to Judy Garland’s Lucky Day, “I’m going to get this,” and we surely hope she does as a victorious send-off for the popular TV series.
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 5 kicks off with a three-episode premiere on Prime Video on April 14, followed by new episodes weekly until the series finale on May 26.
