Spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3 episode 1 follow.
Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, nicknamed Baby Yoda, make their long-awaited comeback in episode 1 of The Mandalorian season 3.
Din reconnected with old friends and made new enemies in the absence of Cara Dune (Gina Carano), who was sacked from the Star Wars series on Disney Plus.
Mando is looking for forgiveness after defeating Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) in a battle at the end of season two. He appears to be able to find it on Mandalore, his people’s homeworld.
Most importantly… after their reunion in The Book of Boba Fett, our beloved father-and-son team are back together once more.
The Mandalorian and The Armorer have bitter reunion
Din made a promise as a Child of the Watch to never remove his helmet when he became a Mandalorian.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged to doing so to The Armorer, having removed his helmet during an emotional parting with Grogu in the season two finale, when the Child walked off with Jedi Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
While Mando is now an apostate, banned from his tribe, he saves The Armorer and several other people from a gruesome death when he intrudes on a Mandalorian induction ritual and kills a huge beast that had attacked the gathering.
There is a possible road to repentance for Mando, but it requires passage to Mandalore, the Mandalorians’ homeworld.
Cara Dune’s absence explained by Greef Karga
Cara Dune was a character that featured as an ally of the eponymous character in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian.
Gina, on the other hand, was dismissed from the programme following ‘abhorrent and reprehensible’ social media statements in which the former MMA fighter apparently equated being under Republican government to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.
Rather than pretending that Cara is no longer a part of the show’s reality, she was addressed during a chat between Mando and Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), the redesigned Navarro’s high magistrate.
Greef explains why Cara can’t fill the post of marshal after admitting that he needs one to preserve law and order, noting, ‘After she brought in Moff Gideon, she was recruited by Special Forces.’ So there we go!
Din is desperate to bring an old friend back to life
Despite his aversion to droids, the main character of The Mandalorian teamed up with a droid named IG-11 in the first season.
Mando eventually comes to trust IG-11 with his life, even allowing the droid to remove his helmet so that it may administer him with life-saving care for his near-fatal injuries.
As Mando arrives in Navarro, IG-11 has been transformed into a statue… Din, on the other hand, wants him reanimated because he feels he needs a droid he can trust to accompany him on his journey to Mandalore.
When he is successful in resurrecting IG-11, the droid returns to his previous procedure of destroying the ‘asset’ Grogu… So there’s still some work to be done to make the robot a useful ally again.
Mando and Grogu evade a pirate attack
Greef is challenged on Navarro by a bunch of pirates who want to drink in their former pub, which has now been converted into a school.
Both Greef and Mando frighten them away, with the latter shooting four of the men dead as their commander scarpers off.
After Din and Grogu flee Navarro, they are pursued by pirates, who take them to their captain in his massive ship.
Mando escapes their clutches, but we have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ll see of the Davy Jones-like visitor.
Bo-Katan Kryze sits on a throne – but it’s not the one she wants
Bo-Katan makes her live-action début in The Mandalorian’s second season, chasing after Moff Gideon and the Darksaber in his hands.
Mando eventually won the Darksaber in a fight with Moff Gideon, making him the lawful successor to Mandalore’s kingdom – a role that Bo-Katan thought she was entitled to.
In season three, Bo-Katan and Mando reconnect, and while she is sitting on a throne, it is definitely not the one she desires.
Will the two end up battling over who will reign on Mandalore’s throne once and for all? Will Din continue his mission to Mandalore in order to be forgiven for violating his faith?
The Mandalorian is available to watch on Disney Plus, with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
