Warning: spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 3 episode 3.
As Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) jet away from their deadly quest on Mandalore, the next installment of The Mandalorian takes an unexpected turn.
The Star Wars series on Disney Plus is nothing short of breathtaking, as fans are whisked away to the wonderful city of Coruscant, where former Imperial scientist Doctor Pershing (Omid Abtahi) is now living in an amnesty programme after switching allegiance to the New Republic.
Later, once Din and Bo-Katan meet up with members of Mando’s credo, the Children of the Watch, a shocking discovery about their helmets is made, leaving some TV show viewers distraught.
Here’s what happened in the most recent episode and what it may mean.
Bo-Katan keeps schtum over mythosaur discovery
As Bo-Katan went into the Mandalore mines’ Living Waters in episode two to save Din, who’d sunk to the bottom of the sea, she encountered a live monster that had to be a mythical mythosaur.
Given how sceptical Bo-Katan has been about the old, archaic methods of the religion, witnessing the entity – which was thought to be extinct – with her own eyes may have made her tremble a little.
As Din awakens from his coma in episode three, Bo-Katan asks if he saw anything living under the ocean… When he swears he didn’t, she fails to reveal what is beyond the surface.
The Armorer (Emily Swallow) once said: ‘The songs of eons past foretold of the mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore,’ so perhaps Bo-Katan is aware of what the existence of the creature could mean, both for Mandalore and for its possible future ruler, Din.
Doctor Pershing encounters old colleague in amnesty programme
Doctor Pershing originally appeared in season one of The Mandalorian, working with the Imperial remnant in their attempt to get The Child.
After helping to capture Grogu and working for Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), he’s clearly troubled by his evil line of work, and he’s currently residing in an amnesty programme administered by the New Republic in the bustling metropolis of Coruscant.
While Doctor Pershing is glad to be accepted into society, he is increasingly dissatisfied that he cannot continue his previous studies on cloning since the New Republic prohibits exploration of the area.
Elia Kane (Katy O’Brian), a former Imperial communications officer whom Doctor Pershing had met when working for Gideon, meets him in the amnesty accomodation and persuades him to continue his study, even if it is illegal, since he feels it may be useful to the New Republic.
Surprise surprise – the doctor is betrayed by Imperial loyalist
Who else was betting on Kane still being wicked in secret?
It came as no surprise when she deceived Doctor Pershing, taking him to an ancient Imperial ship to acquire items needed to set up a lab for his study.
Doctor Pershing is apprehended by the New Republic, and while he swears that Kane set him up in a trap, his captors put him in a’mind flayer’ to offer him with’relief’ from his stress.
Kane looks on menacingly, chewing on old Imperial cookies to show where her true allegiance lay while she ramps up the intensity of the machine, likely with disastrous effects for Doctor Pershing’s mental condition.
Din Djarin and Bo-Katan are welcomed back into creed – with a condition
Din returns to his religion after bathing in the Mandalore mines’ Life Waters, accompanied by Bo-Katan, who witnessed her castle being bombed by attackers.
Din announces that he has been redeemed in accordance with the Armorer’s terms, handing her proof after scooping up some of the water in a tube.
Mando is informed by the Armorer that he has been forgiven for earlier removing his helmet… Bo-Katan, on the other hand, has not only bathed in the Living Waters by diving in to save Din, but she has also not removed her helmet since.
When it was revealed that Din and Bo-Katan might never remove their helmets again, numerous fans were understandably upset at the prospect of not seeing Pedro and Katee’s faces on television in future episodes of the show.
‘Bo was supposed to influence Din and make him feel more comfortable removing his helmet sometimes but instead Din influenced Bo and now she doesn’t want to remove her helmet anymore PAIN,’ one person tweeted.
‘Bo, you were the chosen one! You were supposed to get Din (also Pedro) to take his helmet off, not join him!!!!’ another said.
Someone else wrote: ‘If Bo keeps her helmet on all season I swear to god.’
Given that the episode is titled ‘The Convert,’ may this mean that Bo-Katan has converted to the religious practises of the Children of the Watch?
Or is it still possible for Din to reject the old ways and usher in a new era of Mandalore, where donning a helmet isn’t the be-all and end-all?
The Mandalorian is available to watch on Disney Plus, with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
