Warning: spoilers ahead for The Last of Us episode 7.
After last week’s The Last of Us, everyone was wondering if Joel was still alive.
In episode 7, it is proven that Joel (Pedro Pascal) is still alive… Yet Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is in desperate need of a miracle to keep him that way.
The majority of the new episode centres on Ellie’s past, when she was raised as an orphan at a Fedra school with her closest friend Riley (Storm Reid), who makes her debut on the programme.
It’s explained in the protagonist’s flashbacks how she was bitten before discovering she was resistant to the Cordyceps fungus, and why Riley hasn’t been seen since.
Joel’s life hangs in the balance after raider attack
At the end of episode six, it was unclear if Joel would live after getting stabbed in the stomach by an assailant while on their journey to find the Fireflies.
Joel was bleeding profusely after pulling the end of the baseball bat out of his abdomen as he and Ellie galloped away, before fainting and falling from their horse.
In episode seven, Ellie manages to bring Joel into an abandoned home for protection, but she’s at a loss as to how she can assist him, while he wants her to journey up north to his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), clearly accepting that his death is unavoidable.
Yet Ellie isn’t one to give up lightly, especially when the odds appear to be stacked against them.
Flashback to Ellie’s life at Fedra with best friend Riley
In a flashback to Ellie’s time at Fedra military school, it is revealed that she struggled with authority while being groomed to become either an inferior grunt or a superior commander, dominating the streets of the Boston QZ.
Ellie gets into a confrontation with another student, and it’s revealed that her irritated demeanour is most likely due to the fact that her closest friend Riley has been gone for weeks.
Riley comes into Ellie’s room one night and informs her that she has not only joined the Fireflies resistance movement, but that she also has an exciting night planned for her.
Ellie is unprepared for the thrilling – and terrifying – night ahead.
Riley takes Ellie on night of her life as romance blossoms
Riley brings Ellie to the decaying mall, which Fedra evidently does not realise is fully powered by their electrical grid.
Riley has fantastic surprises in store for her pal, including a trip to the arcade, a merry-go-round ride, a fun-filled escalator ride, and a visit to a horror-filled costume shop.
Their night is not without difficulties, one of which arises when Ellie uncovers explosives made by Riley for the Fireflies.
What’s more, Riley reveals that the Fireflies are sending her away, and they may never see each other again.

Ellie eventually stops dancing on the costume shop counter while wearing bizarre masks before imploring Riley not to leave her, to which Riley complies.
Ellie then expresses her true love for Riley by kissing her on the lips, with both of them reciprocating their feelings for one other.
But, their romantic moment is cut short by an ominous commotion as an infected wades into their midst.
The truth behind Ellie’s bite and Riley’s fate is revealed
When both adolescents engage in a fight with the infected, with Riley attempting to kill it with her rifle, Ellie strikes the fatal blow with her trusty knife.
Riley is shocked to see Ellie has been bitten on her arm, as well as the bite she received on her hand.
Riley and Ellie consider their choices, opting against firing the pistol on themselves while confronting what they feel is their inevitable fate – to lose their brains and join the swarm of infected.
Ellie, as we all know, not only lives, but does not become infected… but Riley is no longer alive in the current day. At this moment, we can only speculate on what happened to her.
Ellie won’t give up on Joel as unbreakable bond grows stronger
Upon witnessing Ellie’s flashback, it appears that while she may not have been able to rescue Riley, she will not accept not being able to save Joel.
Ellie anxiously searches through the house’s drawers and cabinets, ultimately locating some black thread and a needle.
She returns to Joel, who has a tear pouring down his cheek since he likely imagined Ellie had left him, exactly as he had informed her.
Before she begins patching up his wound, the adolescent clutches his hand, their fingers entwined as he tightens his grip.
Joel is in excruciating pain, and Ellie is doing everything she can to help him heal – but will it be enough?
