Following widespread criticism, The Idol will finish one week sooner than initially planned.
The HBO series, created by Euprhoria’s Sam Levinson, was one of the most anticipated shows of the year, but a Rolling Stone piece published in March described it as “torture porn” before a single episode had even aired.
The show was then panned by reviewers and spectators alike when it eventually premiered earlier this month, with some claiming the graphic material went too far.
While the programme was initially scheduled to have six episodes, actor Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye has revealed that the fifth will be the final one.
Co-creator Tesfaye, 33, shared the news on social media, saying the programme has ‘one more episode’ that will premiere this Sunday.
While the show’s production crew has not revealed why an episode was removed, a source has revealed more.
‘The season ended up being five episodes when it was all said and done after Sam took over and made significant changes. The story only ended up requiring five,’ they told TV Line.
The last episode, named Jocelyn Forever, will most likely focus on Lily- Rose Depp, who portrays the eponymous character, an up-and-coming pop singer who, following a mental breakdown, began a complicated connection with Tedros (Tesfaye), a self-help guru and the leader of a contemporary cult.
The programme sparked controversy after insiders informed Rolling Stone that it had gone “wildly, disgustingly off the rails” and was “in upheaval.”
Tesfaye quickly responded, slamming the newspaper with a clip from the concert that dubbed the magazine “irrelevant.”
The first two episodes were blasted by critics, who labelled it “torture porn” and several fans slammed the obscene scenes.
Two weeks ago, HBO replied to allegations that the programme was being cancelled by claiming that no decision on future seasons had been made.
In a statement, HBO said it was ‘being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined’ and that it ‘has not’.
