During Sunday night’s edition of Tempting Fortune, viewers chastised candidates for their emotional reactions to the possibility of a call from home.
The Channel 4 show featured a party of 12 acquaintances attempting a 19-day trek through the South African wilderness.
Viewers were perplexed after game participants sobbed over the final temptation of this weekend’s programme.
Following the division of the cohort into two groups – ardent spenders and those ready to follow the guidelines and avoid succumbing to temptation – they were all given the opportunity to call loved ones at home.
Each minute spent on the phone would cost the company £100 out of the total reward money of £300,000.
Despite the high cost, a few competitors dialled numbers while others sobbed as they remained tough and refused to give in.
Fans on Twitter were quick to react to the reality show’s dramatics, baffled by the programme’s stars for struggling to go two weeks without a call from home.
One penned: ‘9 days and crying like babies ffs, ppl have longer holidays abroad without speaking to family & some friends, ridiculous [sic]’.
Another stated: ‘Really don’t get these “call home” rewards after just a week on a reality show. Even with a phone in my pocket I can get through a fortnight without calling family [sic]’.
‘Surely they told their families they were going away for 2 weeks, what’s the fuss about? [sic]’, was a Twitter user’s response to the outbursts on screen.
Others, however, were much more understanding, particularly those with children, who said their visit home was “priceless.”
The brand new game show gives participants the opportunity to win a large amount of money if they can avoid the ultimate temptations.
When they arrived in the South African desert, they were provided rudimentary tools and provisions to help them on their challenging terrain journey.
Exorbitantly priced amenities, such as a shower or a container of liquor, are intended to entice competitors to give in to their desires.
The game show, hosted by Paddy McGuinness, has a major twist and has vowed to deduct £25,000 from the reward money if any of the participants decide to abandon the trip.
Tempting Fortune airs tomorrow night at 9pm on Channel 4.
