Takeshi’s Castle is returning, with a new group of presenters taking over from Craig Charles, whose voice has become synonymous with the ultimate hangover TV programme.
The Red Dwarf actor will not be returning for the Amazon Prime Video relaunch, but we do have the bants of not one, but two new comics.
Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis will provide commentary as 100 players attempt to siege the impregnable fortress by tumbling off bridges, plunging into water, and being chased by guards, devils, and even huge foam mushrooms.
‘Nothing is more magical than a reboot of a successful show from yesteryear, heavy though is the pressure in bringing back the wonder that is Takeshi’s Castle,’ said Tom and Romesh in a joint statement.
‘We are honoured to be bringing back the maddest show of all time to a whole new generation; hopefully they can take away the life lessons we learnt from the original.’
Takeshi’s Castle aired in Japan from 1986 to 1990 and was revived in the UK from 2002 to 2004, with Charles commentating on the original material for Challenge TV before being replaced by Dick and Dom.
It was later given fresh life by Roman Kemp, who hosted a celebrity version.
Last year, the former Corrie actor stated that a comeback would be “definitely something I’d look at.”
‘I had such fun doing it,’ he said.
‘You just say what you see and you can be so irreverent at tea time, it was such a fun thing to do,’ he continued.
‘But they haven’t asked yet.’
Takeshi’s Castle returns to Amazon Prime Video on August 30.
