After cutting his skull open during a task, Survivor participant Bruce Perreault was told to leave the programme by medics.
The insurance agent is one of the participants stranded on a desert island, deprived of basic necessities and forced to compete in tasks for rewards and immunity from elimination.
But, tragedy struck only minutes into the first episode of Season 44 of the CBS gameshow when Perreault slapped his head and began feeling ‘lightheaded.’
The 44-year-old and his other candidates were charged with crawling beneath a low wooden structure on the seashore during the first physical challenge.
But, when he departed the building, Perreault hit his head on one of the beams, resulting in a terrible cut above his forehead.
Following the challenge, Perreault was lowered to the sandy beach, with a worried participant heard asking him, ‘Are you OK?’
‘Everyone, come to a halt!’ Medical! ‘Medical, come in,’ presenter Jeff Probst said as the opposing team came to a halt.
A team of doctors then rushed over to Perreault who was still on his knees on the beach, with the contestant telling the medics he feels ‘lightheaded’.
Perreault was given oxygen, while his bleeding wound was bandaged up, and he later continued with Survivor.
However, later in the evening, Perreault started feeling ill and medics were called in again.
He informed them that his head was ‘killing me,’ and they urged him to leave the game show following an examination.
‘I know it’s hard to hear, but there is no doubt this is the right decision,’ said Probst, as Perreault cried and said he wanted to participate ‘so bad.’
The 61-year-old presenter continued: ‘I’m so sorry. I am genuinely heartbroken for you.
‘You are a shining light. You are so positive. You are a leader. But you understand why we’re doing this right?’
Perreault’s fellow castaways were encouraging, with one assuring him that they ‘loved him’ as he was carried away on a stretcher.
Meanwhile, the UK version of Survivor is getting ready to return to our screens after a two-decade hiatus.
The BBC revealed last year that the reality TV series will be revived, with comedian Joel Dommett being confirmed as the reboot’s presenter.
Survivor airs on CBS in the US.
