After guest Alastair Campbell cursed live on TV, the hosts of Sunday Brunch were compelled to apologise.
The journalist, who formerly served as Tony Blair’s official spokesperson at Number 10 Downing Street, went on the Channel 4 show to discuss his new book, But What Can I Do? : Why Politics Has Gone So Wrong, and How You Can Help Fix It.
The episode on July 9 marked Simon Rimmer’s return to the show following the devastating loss of his father Pete, whom he characterised in his homage as his “idol.”
While Simon and co-host Tim Lovejoy were speaking with Alastair, the 66-year-old broadcaster made an on-air error while discussing activism.
Sitting on the sofa in the studio, he said: ‘One of the messages of the book is the three most important letters in the word “activism” is “act” – doing stuff. Sitting there on your sofa just saying, “He’s a t**t”…’
The presenters swiftly stepped in, telling their interviewee: ‘Got to apologise for that.’
‘Sorry, I beg your pardon,’ Alastair said, before carrying on with his point.
‘But that’s what they do,’ he continued.
‘So they’ll be sitting there tweeting away merrily… that’s not activism. Activism is getting out there and doing stuff.
Simon, 60, was absent from Sunday Brunch last week as he mourned the passing of his father.
In a post put out on Instagram showing a photo of him with his dad, the TV personality wrote: ‘It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my hero, my dad Peter.’
After being inundated with messages of support, he wrote in a later post: ‘I am overwhelmed at all the beautiful messages about my dad. We’re taking it one day at a time and looking out for each other and especially my mum. A windy walk with Cali at New Brighton whilst talking to dad helped x.’
On last week’s Sunday Brunch, Tim, 55, introduced his co-host Miquita Oliver as he announced to viewers: ‘Miquita is here today, welcome Miquita. How are you, are you well?
‘As you may know, Simon has stepped away from the show this week, but we are sending him our love.’
Sunday Brunch airs on Sundays at 9.30am on Channel 4.
