*WARNING: Spoilers for Succession below*
Jeremy Strong went above and above for his role as Kendall Roy in the suspenseful Succession conclusion, even drinking the awful smoothie that his on-screen siblings made for him.
A lot has been made about the 44-year-old’s method acting and the amount of work he puts into a role in the past, but we can’t help but praise his efforts for the rollercoaster season four episode.
The Roy family momentarily came together in the episode before to the final vote over the firm, and looked to be on the same page when it came to their aspirations for Waystar Royco’s future following the death of patriarch Logan (Brian Cox).
Shiv (Sarah Snook) was seemingly back on board with her brothers’ plot to tilt the vote in their favour after learning that Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgrd) had cut her out of his future plans.
They celebrated the choice in the most Roy way imaginable, by opening every cupboard in their mother’s kitchen and dumping everything in sight into a blender in order to cook him a “meal fit for a king.”
They put in milk, Tabasco, bread – called ‘frozen knobbies’ – a whole egg and shell, cocoa powder, Branston pickle, and sunflower oil spread with gusto.
There were also some Heinz beans and a variety of sauces on the counter, but it’s unclear if those made it into the final drink before it was blended into a black, viscous mixture topped with a cherry and Shiv’s spit.
Kendall boldly took a mouthful, demonstrating his desperation for the number one place, before Roman dumped the remainder over his head.
Jeremy stated during a visit on the official Succession podcast that he completely committed to the situation, even drinking the genuine smoothie, eggshells and all.
‘It was all those things,’ he said when asked what it contained. ‘We did it only a few times and I went outside and retched, jumped in the ocean and washed it off my hair. I did drink it.
‘I wouldn’t know how not to drink it. He wants it that badly that he’s going to drink whatever that is. But it was disgusting.
‘It was a wonderful night, and we wrapped the show at the end of that scene. That was the final thing we did.’
Unfortunately, Kendall’s efforts were futile, as he was stopped at the final hurdle – when Shiv betrayed him by voting Lukas’ agreement through, with her on-again, off-again husband, Tom Wambsgans, gaining the post of US CEO of the corporation.
The episode and series closed with the rejected businessman strolling down the Hudson River with faithful Colin a few paces behind, coming to grips with having the firm in his hands before it was ripped from him in the blink of an eye.
Succession is available to stream on HBO Max.
