Bill Bailey gave a defiant speech in the Strictly Come Dancing final, saying that he hopes his performance of The Show Must Go On could be used to inspire good despite recent news regarding new lockdown restrictions.
It was a night of exceptionally high scores for everyone across the board, and that was especially true of Bill and his dance partner Oti Mabuse.
They found themselves on the receiving end of the night’s first perfect score, getting three tens from the judges.
It was in response to their second dance of the evening which was to The Show Must Go On. It was a dramatic performance that incorporated magic, pyrotechnics (including a fire-spewing guitar) and even some circus stunts.
The song was more than just a showy dance number for the comedian too. During a post-dance interview, Claudia Winkleman said to Bill: ‘I just wanted to quickly say, that was a rally call that song for you, wasn’t it?’
Bill went on to say: ‘Yeah, it very much was. And now, with what we’ve found out with the restrictions, it’s going to be harder, people are going to be isolated at Christmas, this is not just a song about the arts.’
‘This is an anthem about not giving up. Keeping hope. Getting through this. This is what this is. The show must go on. It’s about being strong and getting through all this.’
It was a defiant message that came at just the right moment as the announcement of a stricter lockdown was made, especially in areas such as London and the South East of England.
Strictly Come Dancing is available for catch-up on BBC iPlayer.
