Finn Wolfhard has said that season five of Stranger Things will have huge changes.
The fifth and final season of the enormously popular sci-fi series, which also stars Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, Winona Ryder, and David Harbour, began production recently.
The narrative is kept under wraps, but at the end of season four, the group reunited to take on Vecna after fighting separately in Hawkins and elsewhere.
In a new interview, Finn, who plays Mike Wheeler, emphasised that the relationships will be considerably different from what we’ve seen in previous episodes.
Shedding light on the future episodes, the 21-year-old, who will appear in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, promises audiences more of ‘leader Mike’ and a return to the vibes of the first season.
‘This last season is sort of a crossroads, and so we’re getting back into a lot of the dynamics of season one, which is really fun,’ he teased. ‘Every season has gotten bigger and bigger and bigger, and this season is huge, but it’s also kind of isolated as well. So it’s really fun, and I’m very excited for people to see it.’
Finn was also excited about having moments with co-stars he ‘hadn’t really acted with for a long time’, after the different structure of the fourth season, as well as reuniting with Charlie Heaton and Noah.
Reflecting on the disparity between the two series, he told the Hollywood Reporter, ‘We actually didn’t film much for the first few months of production because they were so focused on all the Hawkins things. So I was quite envious.
‘I was like, “Aw, man.” Even when I finally watched the show, my favorite part was watching the other guys in Hawkins. I just liked that storyline so much.
‘Not being around everyone all the time was definitely a bummer about filming 4, but 5 is the opposite. We’re all together all the time, and a bunch of us live around the corner and across the street from each other in real life. So the cast is really seeing each other a lot, and we’re in a lot of the same scenes, which has been really great.
‘We’re about three months in, and it’s really crazy. You think about how to be as present as possible, but then at the same time, you’re conflicted that this is the last one. So I’m trying to find that balance of staying present while also knowing that this is going to be the last season. But it’s been great.’
In January, the official Netflix account released a snapshot of the cast, including Millie, Finn, and Caleb McLaughlin, preparing for the final season after 18 months of filming.
Sadie Sink was also visible in the upload, indicating that Max Mayfield would be making a reappearance after spending the previous episodes in a coma.
After being attacked by Vecna, Eleven used her superpowers to bring her pal back to life, but she was left ‘brain dead, blind, and with all of her bones broken’.
But this shows that there is still hope that Max may recover in time to help the Hawkins group slam the portal to the Upside Down once and for all.
Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix now.
