Sadie Sink has learned to ‘laugh’ about her ‘awkward’ first kiss on Stranger Things’ set.
The 20-year-old actress pondered on the moment she and co-star Caleb McLaughlin, who were 15 and 16 at the time, had to lock lips during the Snow Ball sequences in season two of the Netflix sci-fi hit, and said it was a ‘funny’ experience.
Asked about her first kiss, she told W Magazine: ‘On set for Stranger Things. It was with Caleb McLaughlin, who plays Lucas. We were filming. You can see it on Netflix!
‘We were both awkward, but it was also funny because all our friends were there and all these extras and lights and music.
‘It was nerve-wracking at the time, but I look back now and can laugh about it.’
The actress, who rose to popularity on the show as Max, has already spoken out about the kiss, sparking uproar on Twitter when she disclosed it wasn’t actually in the script.
‘The kiss was not written in the script,’ she said during a post show clip in 2017, noting that creators Ross and Matt Duffer sprung it on her.
‘I get there, the first day of Snow Ball,’ she recalled. ‘One of you, I think it was you Ross, you say, “Oh, Sadie, you ready for the kiss?” I’m like, “What! No! That’s not in the script. That’s not happening”. So the whole day I was like stressed out, I was like ‘Oh my god, wait, am I gonna have to…” ‘
The kiss occurred on the second day of filming, with a couple of hundred extras present, as well as the crew and their parents, including Sadie’s mother.
Meanwhile, in the same 2017 conversation, Ross told Sadie that her reaction to the kiss prompted him to include it in the screenplay.
‘You reacted so strongly to this. I was just joking and you were so freaked out that I was like well, I gotta make her do it now,’ he said.
She replied: ‘That’s why it’s my fault?,’ while Matt added: ‘That’s why I’m saying it’s your fault.’
Matt revealed in an interview with Variety the same year that it wasn’t scripted and that they dropped it on the young performers at the last minute.
‘You’d think it’s the end of the world but I guess it’s a big deal,’ he said. ‘Neither of those kisses were written in the script so we kind of dropped that on them the day of and caused a major panic. But they did it.’
He added: ‘You have to torture them a little bit. You know you’ve got to entertain yourself some way. And we have all these children who are just fun. I know exactly how to push their buttons at this point.’
Meanwhile, Sadie later told TheWrap that she ‘never objected’ to the kiss itself, and she clarified that she felt ‘comfortable’ on set at all times.
‘I mean, of course I was nervous because it’s a first kiss, right?. But I never objected to [it] or felt pushed into anything,’ she said.
‘I always felt comfortable and the Duffer Brothers, they do the best job, and always create a comfortable space. And if I felt uncomfortable with anything, I wouldn’t have done it.’
Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.
