A stalker, who had been previously sentenced for aggravated burglary, broke into his ex-partner’s home and killed her lover while they were in bed together.
Daniel Thompson, who is currently incarcerated at The Jefferson County Correctional Facility in Texas, for murdering James Vail is the subject of Crime + Investigation and Netflix documentary I Am A Stalker.
The criminal’s pattern of violent and abusive behaviour started with his high-school girlfriend Angie, whose parents’ house he would break into to watch and stand over her while she slept.
The couple later married and had children with Thompson regularly subjecting Angie to repeated violent attacks during the marriage, before she moved into a women’s shelter.
When Angie met a new partner and moved in with him, Thompson broke into her home armed with a knife and was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison for aggravated burglary.
After being released Thompson started a new relationship with a woman, who does not wish to be identified, and when they broke up Thompson stalked and harassed her, according to the docuseries.
In 2010, Thompson broke into her home, where she was in bed with a lover, James Vail, who he stabbed to death while he was lying next to her.
In the episode, detective Mike Crocker, who worked on the murder investigation, visited the scene of the crime and said: ‘It’s the first time I’ve been back here, and it definitely brings up some memories.
‘When I arrived on the scene the female that was there was hysterical, screaming, basically uncontrollable.
‘There was blood all over the place, there was a male laying on the bed with a stab wound to the chest. The female told us that somebody came in and killed the person that she was in bed with that night.
Crocker continued: ‘In the interview, she explained that it was her ex-boyfriend Daniel Thompson that had broken into the house and killed James Vail.’
In October 2011, Thompson was found guilty of second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
His sentence carries a maximum term of 30 years meaning he will be eligible for probation in 2034, having served just 23 years.
I Am A Stalker continues on Crime + Investigation on Tuesday at 9pm.
