If there was one memorable scene from The White Lotus season two, it has to be Jennifer Coolidge’s delivery of the legendary statement, ‘These gays, they’re trying to murder me.’
However, according to reports, the scene in question has been removed from a Russian streaming site.
Jennifer returned as Tanya McQuoid, who unwittingly encountered a bunch of glamorous and presumably rich gay guys who were actually trying to murder her rather than whisk her away for some wild evenings out in the second series of the famous HBO show.
Jennifer (with the assistance of her assistant Portia, played by Haley Lu Richardson) figures out the plot and delivers those iconic remarks while on a yacht with them.
But, according to Russian news site Meduza, it wasn’t the ‘gays’ out to kill her, but the ‘men’ as the line was apparently censored.
The boat driver in the scene replies: ‘We’re all gays here,’ but this has also been changed to: ‘We’re all men here.’
Several sequences with sex worker Valentina and her buddy Mia having sex with each other have also ‘disappeared,’ according to the publication.
That is not all.
According to Russian news site Wonderzine, Tanya’s discovery of the leader of the ring having sex with his ‘nephew’ Jack has also been cut.
The changes were made as a new law pushing down on Russia’s LGBTQ+ movement neared passage in November.
The Duma gave final approval to a law that sets further prohibitions on actions that are believed to promote LGBT rights.
Under Vladimir Putin, the leadership in Moscow has become increasingly ultra-conservative and says it is committed to ‘traditional values’.
The bill broadens a restriction on what it calls “propaganda of non-traditional sexual interactions” to minors, which was established under legislation known as the “gay propaganda” statute.
The Kremlin first used it in 2013, but the adjustments have greatly strengthened it.
Legislators introduced legislation in November to prohibit the dissemination of such material to anyone aged 18 and up.
The bill, which prohibits all advertising, media and online resources, books, films, and theatre productions deemed to contain ‘propaganda’ and was previously used to prohibit depictions of same-sex romance in films, was approved in its third and final reading, dealing another blow to the country’s embattled LGBTQ+ community.
The White Lotus is available to stream on NOW.
