The new teaser for Robbie Williams’ upcoming Netflix documentary reveals that musical prowess may run in his family.
Fans across the world have been following the singer’s life with interest for decades, from his early days with Take That to his developing solo career.
While Robbie, 49, achieved incredible levels of success, he also felt plagued by the spotlight, explaining in a new trailer for his four-part docu-series that he suffered a ‘nervous mental breakdown in front of thousands of people’.
In the midst of the musician’s life’s gloom, there has also been brightness, with the Millennium singer marrying his wife, Ayda Field, in 2010.
The couple has four children together, and the latest teaser for the documentary shows glimpses of their family life behind closed doors.
At the very end of the teaser, Robbie watches in stunned silence as his daughter performs one of his most famous songs, Angels.
‘She won’t forsake me,’ his daughter sings, as Robbie stares in awe.
He begins to sing along with her, as she then belts out: ‘I’m loving angels instead,’ sparking applause from her parents.
The documentary trailer features a variety of clips spanning Robbie’s life and career, as he states in a voiceover: ‘It’s astounding what’s happened in my life. But the past has me in a headlock. Something has to give.’
The musician recalled the ‘insane’ experience of joining Take That at the age of 16, before becoming the ‘centre of the pop culture universe,’ with loving fans all around the world.
In an old tape of Jonathan Ross, Robbie is characterised as “one of the world’s greatest showmen,” with hordes of admirers waiting for him below his window.
‘Do you ever wish you had a normal life?’ he’s asked, to which he responds: ‘This is a normal life.’
However, there reached a point where Robbie felt as though he was ‘giving more and more’ of himself away, ‘to the point that you’re not somebody you recognise’.
He thought he couldn’t trust anyone because of his position in the spotlight, and he ended up enduring tremendous emotional anguish when he had a “breakdown.”
Nonetheless, the star was divided about the role that fame had in his life.
‘The thing that would destroy me has also made me successful,’ he says. ‘Touch the fire. Push when it says pull. And see if I can live.’
In a very tender moment of the trailer, Robbie is cuddling and kissing one of his children, who he asks: ‘Who loves you?’
The toddler adorably answers: ‘Mummy,’ as Ayda cheers.
The documentary, which comes shortly after Netflix’s release of the extremely successful Beckham docu-series, will undoubtedly be a raw and eye-opening experience.
The Robbie Williams documentary is launching on Wednesday November 8 on Netflix.
