Rob Brydon stopped short of denying that Gavin and Stacey will return to our televisions.
Earlier this week, fans across the UK were whipped into a frenzy as claims surfaced stating the actors will be filming a new Christmas special this summer, five years after the show ended on a dramatic cliffhanger.
Ruth Jones, the show’s co-creator, rejected these reports in an interview with RTE Radio 1 on Wednesday, confirming they were’sadly a rumour’.
She said the accusations began after she was photographed having lunch with co-creator James Corden a few months ago, when he returned to the UK after living in America.
This weekend, Rob, who portrayed Uncle Bryn in the series, commented on the accusations, saying they were simply ‘another story’ but admitting he wasn’t quite convinced.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today show, the 58-year-old actress said: “I get asked about this in every interview I ever do.”
‘I sound like a politician, as far as I’m aware it’s another rumour. I don’t know. I mean, I’d love it if it were true.’
According to Deadline, the new special is now in pre-production and will be produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Ruth’s Tidy Productions, and Fulwell 73, which Corden co-owns.
The famous sitcom centred on Gavin and Stacey, played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, as they pursued a long-distance love between Essex and Wales.
It aired for three seasons from 2007 to 2010, and returned in 2019 for a holiday special.
Smithy, portrayed by James, and Nessa, played by Ruth, were in an on-and-off romance throughout the series, and the special finished on a cliffhanger when Nessa proposed.
When the 2019 Christmas episode aired, it received the greatest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years, with an average viewership of 11.6 million people, making it the most watched holiday special since Christmas Day 2008.
By the New Year, 17.1 million people had watched it, making it the most popular scripted show of the decade.
In addition, the programme won the impact prize at the 2020 National Television Awards.
