Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley’s interview with a scientist has been branded ‘misogynistic’ after he asked about her politics.
The presenter was slammed for his interview with Professor of Health Psychology, Susan Michie, and clashed with the expert over the end of lockdown.
Madeley questioned Michie about her political views, mentioning her membership of the Communist Party and saying: ‘If your politics informs your sense of control, it’s not just a medical argument, but you have a political bent to want the state to tell people what to do.’
Michie responded: ‘I’ve come on your programme as a scientist. As do all people who come onto your programme as scientists, they come on to talk about the evidence, the relevant theories, how we approach scientific disciplines, and you don’t ask other scientists about politics. I’m very happy to speak about science, which is what my job is, and to leave it at that.’
Pressing Michie, Madeley asked if she was saying her politics don’t inform her opinion on the subject.
‘I’m saying that I agreed to come on this programme as a scientist and I’m very happy to talk to you about the issues you’re raising as a scientist, which is the same as other scientists that you invite onto the programme,’ she responded.
Madeley then said it was a ‘perfectly fair answer’ and thanked Michie.
Epidemiology lecturer Dr Deepti Gurdasani has responded to the interview on Twitter, claiming she had also been contacted for an interview but wants nothing to do with GMB following Madeley’s question.
‘Very very disappointing to see Richard Madeley essentially quote a hit piece on @SusanMichie today on @GMB – suggesting her very sensible advice as a scientist was in some way compromised by her political leanings? WTF? This is misogynistic BS,’ Dr Gurdasani wrote.
‘Why invite scientists onto your show @GMB, if you’re then going to instigate attacks on them based on right-wing trash hit pieces – leading to massive pile ons. Don’t expect us to appear on your show if you can’t treat us with basic respect. We’re doing a public service.
‘Women scientists who speak up always deal with extensive targeting and personal attacks, without having MSM then platform trash hit pieces on us. Grow up and do better. And please don’t contact me for interviews again. I don’t intend to support your vile platform.’
In a tweet, Michie confirmed she was waiting for an apology, writing: ‘A complaint has been submitted and a public apology requested.’
On Good Morning Britain, Madely has also clashed with Dr Hilary Jones, branding him ‘misleading’ on yesterday’s show.
