Prince Andrew: The Musical was certain to elicit conflicting reviews, given that the Channel 4 show focuses on the ongoing controversies surrounding the disgraced royal.
The Duke of York was not the only person whose past activities were highlighted in the comical spectacle; King Charles III was also a key point of the show, with a mention of his infamous ‘tampon-gate’ scandal.
The musical stars comedic actor Kieran Hodgson as Prince Andrew, and comedian Munya Chawawa as the monarch, when he was previously known as Prince Charles.
At one point, Munya’s Charles has his own musical number, during which he laments the strains of being under ‘continuous surveillance’.
‘Even me, I’ve got no leg to stand on, ‘cos I said I’d like to be Camilla’s tampon,’ he then croons.
‘I meant romantically!’ he added as a side note.
The term “tampon-gate” refers to an occurrence that occurred in 1989, when the King married Princess Diana.
According to a leaked phone call, he joked with Camilla, the now-Queen Consort, that he wanted to ‘dwell inside’ her trousers and be reincarnated as a tampon.
Several viewers were taken aback by the remark, with one writing, ‘Even the Charles Camilla tampon incident makes the cut.’
‘“I haven’t got a leg to stand on, because I said I wanted to be Camilla’s… tampon” CACKLING!’ another remarked.
Another analysed the lyrics in further detail, commenting: ‘Camilla’s tampon and I meant it romantically would be two things you think you would never hear said together ever because no.’
The tampon scandal was represented in The Crown’s fifth season by Dominic West and Olivia Williams, who played Charles and Camilla, respectively.
Dominic told Radio Times that while he initially felt it was a’sordid, unpleasant discussion rehashing it,’ he subsequently realised it was ‘simply an extraordinarily personal dialogue, and what was sordid was the prurient fascination in it’.
‘Most people, if they’re lucky enough, will have had conversations like that with people they love,’ he said.
‘It’s very sweet, tender, and gauche but, like any intensely personal conversation, just not for public consumption.’
Prince Andrew: The Musical is available to watch on All 4.
