Piers Morgan has apologised to I’m A Celebrity… I Need to Get Out of Here! winner Sam Thompson, calling him aa “irritating halfwit.”
Uncensored host Morgan used strong terms to characterise Sam, 31, in a jab at former Ukip leader Nigel Farage, until his son Spencer intervened.
Following in the footsteps of former health secretary Matt Hancock, Morgan wrote on X: ‘Congratulations to Nigel Farage on losing a public vote for the 7th time, this time to an irritating reality TV halfwit in the lowest-rated series of I’m A Celebrity.
‘And for ending up engulfed with snakes, an appropriate final humiliation for the biggest snake in Britain.’
While his comment was branded ‘ungracious’, ‘spiteful’ and ‘unexpectedly bitter’ towards Farage, it was Sam who later received an apology.
‘Sam is a really nice and very switched on guy. Would like to apologise on dad’s behalf for this misinformed tweet,’ Morgan’s eldest son wrote.

UPDATE: My eldest son @spencermorgan93 knows @SamThompsonUK well and says he’s definitely not a halfwit, and is a really genuine down-to-earth guy who speaks highly of me. Apologies, Sam, I clearly misjudged you.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter, 58, also followed up with: ‘UPDATE: My eldest son @spencermorgan93 knows @SamThompsonUK well and says he’s definitely not a halfwit, and is a really genuine down-to-earth guy who speaks highly of me.
‘Apologies, Sam, I clearly misjudged you.’
Made In Chelsea star Sam, whose real name has stunned fans, was crowned King of the Jungle on Sunday, and admitted his time in the jungle was ‘like a dream I didn’t want to be woken up from’.
‘It’s the most surreal thing I’ve ever done in my life,’ he added, with the I’m A Celeb megafan joking he ‘blacked out’ when Ant and Dec first walked into camp.
Morgan’s apology comes after he was forced to broadcast his weekly chat show from home this week due to a positive Covid test.
He had earlier issued an apology after a ‘gloriously vile’ infection, saying in November: ‘To all concerned viewers (including my mother & sister!) who think I’ve looked less than [100], I’ve been diagnosed with bronchitis, sinusitis & conjunctivitis – a gloriously vile trifecta of wheezing, sneezing, pink-eyed hell.
‘Apologies if my head caused more offence than usual.’
While Morgan subsequently acknowledged to being “as rough as a badger’s a*se,” things took an unexpected turn when Andrew Tate claimed to have given the TV presenter Covid.
‘Thanks for your concern, Andrew. Ironically, if I’d had another covid booster I wouldn’t have caught the damn thing again and wouldn’t be feeling so rough.
‘That’ll teach me for listening to ill-informed anti-vaxx imbeciles on the internet…!’ Morgan wrote, hitting back at anti-vaxxers.
Tate, who was imprisoned this year on rape and human trafficking charges, strangely responded: ‘I gave you Covid. I had no immunisations and wore no mask. ‘I finished it.’
He added: ‘I of course suffer zero symptoms because I am too sexy and rich.’
I’m A Celebrity is available to watch on ITVX. Piers Morgan Uncensored airs weeknights at 8pm on TalkTV.
