Piers Morgan has admitted he ‘plays up’ his controversial Good Morning Britain persona, preferring to be known as ‘divisive and polarising’ than beloved.
The broadcaster, who hosts the morning show alongside Susanna Reid, is known for his fiery debates with guests and often controversial takes on the news.
However, he revealed that there’s a ‘theatrical element’ to his work on the programme.
‘Look, there’s a persona that I certainly play up to. I think all television is performance in a way. I certainly think there’s a sort of theatrical element to it as well,’ he explained.
Piers added on an upcoming episode of Gabby Logan’s The Mid.Point Podcast: ‘I certainly play up to that, I don’t chase around trying to be beloved, it would be a fairly lonely journey if I did. So, I prefer to be divisive and polarising, and get everybody going and wake everybody up in the morning.
‘It’s the title of my book, you know, Wake Up, however when I do get home and shut the door I’m like everybody else, and I get a nice bottle of wine out, have a chat with the kids, talk to my mum and dad, watch a bit of telly. I’m a sea of serenity.’
In recent days, Piers has been embroiled in a debate with a GMB guest over the coronavirus vaccine, he clashed with an LGBT activist over gay film roles and, of course, made Health Secretary Matt Hancock squirm as he grilled him over the free school meals debacle.
According to Piers, the interview clip with Hancock has now been viewed almost 30 million times making it the most-watched moment in GMB history.
Reflecting on the clash on Monday, Morgan said on the breakfast programme: ‘What’s extraordinary is had he said, “On reflection, we got that wrong”, everyone watching would have said fair enough. They would have thought a little bit better of the Health Secretary.
‘As it is, that clip has now had nearly 30 million views. It’s the most-watched clip in the history of Good Morning Britain which, when you think about what Danny Dyer said on TV about David Cameron, that’s quite something.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
