Gillian Anderson’s metamorphosis for the next Prince Andrew Netflix film has stunned viewers.
The Netflix film Scoop will be based on former Newsnight producer Sam McAlister’s memoir Scoops: The BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews, From Prince Andrew to Steven Seagal.
Netflix stated that it will examine ‘navigating Palace vetoes, breaking through to Prince Andrew’s inner circle, the high-stakes discussions and intensity of rehearsal – to the jaw-dropping interview itself’.
When the film was announced, the streaming giant also stated that it will honour “the journalists whose tenacity and guts broke through the highest of ceilings.”
The film stars Rufus Sewell as the disgraced royal, while Gillian portrays journalist Emily Maitlis, who publicly probed the Duke of York about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and sleeping with an underage girl.
The streaming site has already revealed first look photographs of the drama, and the principal actors have received a big response.
The photo of Gillian shows her wearing a nearly identical military-style jacket to Maitlis’s in the 2019 interview, as well as a blonde cropped wig, while she glances out of frame, most likely at the prince.
‘Gillian constantly serving in Netflix shows omg,’ user Emily posted on X.
‘Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis. This is my Roman Empire,’ Stuart declared.
‘Anything Gillian Anderson I have to be there,’ Soji added.
Meanwhile, many others were troubled by how much Rufus resembled Prince Andrew.
‘Rufus looks so good! At first glance I could have sworn that really was Andrew!’ Josie posted.
‘Nah Rufus Sewell as Andew…well done make-up team,’ Sian said.
However, Claire said: ‘Well there goes my crush on Rufus Sewell.’
User Katie Brooks also shared: ‘Had to do a second take there. They’ve cast this spot on.’
It also includes Billie Piper as McAlister, Keeley Hawes as Amanda Thirsk, Prince Andrew’s former private secretary, and Romola Garai as Esme Wren, who was in charge of Newsnight during the interview.
The award-winning interview had Maitlis sitting down with the Duke of York, who denied having sex with Virginia Giuffre.
Giuffre believes she was trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein while she was 17 and still considered a child under US law.
However, he said he couldn’t have met her on the reported date since he was at a Pizza Express in Woking.
The interview has already been adapted into film in Prince Andrew: The Musical in 2022, and an Amazon series is also in the works.
A Very Royal Scandal will star Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson.
Scoop will be streaming on Netflix.
