Season 6 of Peaky Blinders finally begins on Sunday night, but coming over two years on from the end of season 5, here’s a little recap from Metro.co.uk so you can dive straight back in.
Fans of the hit BBC series have been very patient, but now the wait for the sixth and final season is nearly over.
The final season of Peaky Blinders has been dubbed as ‘gothic and heavy’ by Tommy Shelby actor Cillian Murphy, as things pick up exactly where they left off last time around when it kicks off on Sunday night
Director Anthony Byrne previously revealed to Digital Spy: ’The very first image you will see will be back in that field, with Tommy with a gun to his head and then we will move on from there and resolve that amazing moment.’
But with so many loose ends to tie up in the last hurrah (for now, there’s a film coming) for the cast, here’s a reminder of what happened at the end of season five.
What happened at the end of season 5?
Oswald Mosley’s assassination fails
Season five followed Tommy’s elaborate plan to take down rival Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin), but after the attempted assassination was foiled at the last minute.
Viewers watched as Mosley made his speech while protesters from Alfie’s gang broke in to disturb the action.
His war comrade Barney Thompson (Cosmo Jarvis) is in place, ready to shoot him dead but before he can he is shot in the head.
Season six should hopefully answer some questions about exactly who gave the fascist politician the information of his impending doom…
Tommy’s left humiliated
As Tommy’s plan to assassinate Mosley went up in flames, the gang leader ran off into the woods as he continued to have visions of his late wife, which had been going on throughout the season.
The last viewers saw Tommy was him putting a gun to his head as Grace Shelby (Annabelle Wallis) told him to come and join her, which came after continuous delusions of his late wife.
Alfie Solomons is alive
Without a doubt, one of the most shocking moments of the finale was the reveal that Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) is still alive.
Tommy headed to Margate to see the East-End gangster alive and well in his seaside home.
It turned out that despite him being presumed dead after being shot at the end of season four, he was in stead just badly injured.
What is the plot of season 6?
Many details of what’s to come have been typically kept under wraps by the show, in order to keep it as thrilling as possible for viewers.
However, what we do know is the timeline will swiftly fast-forward four years 1933, when family tensions are already running high.
Previous trailers seemingly confirmed both the survival of Tommy and the return of Tom Hardy as Alfie Solomons, with new characters set to be added to the mix.
Matriarch Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) is now no longer in the picture, with various cast and creator Stephen having promised the late actress would be paid a worthy tribute in the new series.
The fallout to come between Michael Gray (Finn Cole), his wife Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy) and the rest of the Shelby clan is set to worsen, as the married couple take their scheming even further.
The subject of a huge redemption arc for Tommy will be the underlying plot of season six after he was moments away from ending his life at the end of season five.
‘This series has always been about Tommy [Shelby]’ Steven Knight recently told Metro.co.uk.
But he remained coy about pretty much everything else, telling us: ‘Expect the unexpected. I suppose in this series six we’re looking at can Tommy be redeemed? Can he escape from what he has become?
‘That’s the question that is answered into in episode six.’
Elsewhere, in Polly’s absence, it falls on Ada to step up and become the watchful eye over all the drama.
But, it seems this could work in both her and Tommy’s favour, as the latter looks to continue his journey into the political sphere.
Sophie previously told us: ‘I think that they really they particularly her and Tommy realise they kind of can’t do without each other to me. And I think Tommy realises that actually, Ada is an asset to him, especially if he moves into the sort of political sphere and realises that actually, maybe Ada is as smart as him if not smarter.
There are also at least four new cast members set to come in, played by Stephen Graham, Amber Anderson, Conrad Khan and James Frecheville.
However, their characters’ names and details have been kept firmly under wraps, with the newcomers sure to arrive in a big way.
Either way, there are promises of deception, revenge, heartbreak and more, so count us straight in.
