Peaky Blinders addressed the absence of late star Helen McCrory, as her alter-ego Polly Gray was found to have been killed by the IRA minutes into the show.
The episode picked straight back up from where viewers were left in 2019, with Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) in the field as he looked to take his life.
After his plan to assassinate Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) was foiled at the last minute, the gang leader ran off into the woods after visions of his late wife Grace (Annabelle Wallis), which had been going on throughout the season.
Fast-forward to tonight’s opener, it was revealed Tommy had fired a gun with no bullets in, as he was confronted by his wife Lizzie (Natalie O’Keeffe) moments later.
However, the most difficult issue to face was still to come, as Captain Swig (Charlene McKenna) had harsh news to deliver.
Via a telephone call, she said: ‘Mr Shelby, I imagine you’re curious as to who prevented the assignation last night. If you look out your window, you’ll see a flag of truce.
‘It’s a unit of volunteers bringing the bodies of your dead to you to send to heaven in your own way.
‘Last night’s operation was carried out by soldiers from three Dublin brigades from the Irish Republican Army. We need to keep Mr Mosley alive, that’s all you need to know.’
She abruptly hung up the phone, as Tommy was faced the horror task of finding out the dead at his home.
Of course, fans were soon aware the last body given back to the Shelby family was Polly’s, as Tommy broke down in his grief.
Moments later, official confirmation was given it was indeed Polly who had been killed, as her funeral scenes aired.
The whole Shelby clan reunited for her send-off, as well as some of the family’s key allies.
Tensions ran high, as Michael Gray (Finn Cole) warned he would get revenge on his cousin Tommy, who he entirely blamed for her death.
‘Mum, it was the ambitions and strategies of our man that caused this.
‘I swear in the name of almighty God, no matter what it takes, no matter how many lives I have to take, I will take revenge on Tommy Shelby.
Just what lengths will Michael be prepared to go to in order to get justice for his late mum?
Peaky Blinders season 6 continues next Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
