Paddy McGuinness has slammed Love Island for only having ‘drop dead gorgeous’ contestants, comparing them to those who appeared on his former dating show Take Me Out.
The 48-year-old presenter hosted ITV’s Take Me Out from 2010 to 2019, where he gained fame for his ‘No likey, no lighty’ catchphrase.
Take Me Out featured men trying to impress a line of women, and if they were interested during the three rounds of peacocking, the girls would keep their lights on.
The power would finally go to the man’s hands if there was more than one light on at the end, as he would then choose who to take on a date to the Isle of Fernando’s (real location – Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife).
Paddy has stated his show included normal people, of ‘all different shapes and sizes’.
Speaking on the TWS Sports Podcast, the dad-of-three said: ‘If you look at programmes like Love Island now, where everyone is absolutely drop dead gorgeous, all the guys are full of muscles and they’ve got dead white teeth, and all the girls have got long hair and gorgeous bodies.
‘Take Me Out was more about everybody.
‘There was all different shapes and sizes on Take Me Out, that’s what I loved about it, it wasn’t like everybody was perfect.’
The Top Gear star added that the lads who came on the show were all different – some being ‘dressed in white suits and just being really loud and crazy all around the stage,’ while others were ‘dead nervous and quiet but they’d slowly come out the shell.’
‘Out in the world no one is perfect, that doesn’t exist so I’m glad Take Me Out had all shapes and sizes.’
Take Me Out ran from 2010 for a decade, with more than 100 episodes and 300 dates.
At the time of being axed, a spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’re really sad to see the end of Take Me Out but after 11 years, eight weddings and six babies, for now, our work here is done.
‘Over the years, Paddy has been the dream host and everyone involved from the hard-working crew through to the contestants have been fantastic.’
Paddy is not the only celeb to have spoken out about the ‘perfect’ bodies of Love Island, criticising the show’s lack of diversity.
Last year’s contestant Sharon Gaffka revealed feeling like she was only on the show to ‘tick boxes’.
Speaking about body diversity, Sharon shared there were times she felt ‘unattractive’ surrounded by ‘petite’ women.
‘There’s nothing wrong with that like that is just their natural body and I would never want to shame them in that way at all,’ Sharon said.
‘I think because they’re all very petite, there were times where I felt a bit like, “Oh, am I now also the body diversity card as well as the race diversity card and the career diversity? Am I here to tick these boxes, or am I here because you’ve genuinely matched me with another person?”’
‘In terms of casting for Love Island, the only stipulation to applicants is they must be over 18, single and looking for love,’ they added.
‘This year’s Love Islanders come from a diverse range of backgrounds with a mix of personalities and have a healthy BMI.’
Love Island is set to return to ITV2 in 2022.
