Netflix’s thriller series Ripley has garnered fantastic reviews, with some saying it’s better than the last feature.
The adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel stars Andrew Scott as the eponymous figure, who is recruited to return a wealthy man’s wayward son Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) home from Italy. However, upon arrival, he falls fascinated with the lifestyle, leading to darkness and treachery.
Hollywood already explored the issue in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, and Jude Law.
The film made $128 million worldwide, garnered five Academy Award nominations, and gained a devoted fan base, with many calling it their favourite picture.
Some may think Netflix daring for doing it again after such a successful film.
However, the risk appears to have paid off, as the eight-part series, which also stars Dakota Fanning as Dickie’s lover Marge Sherwood, has received excellent reviews.
‘I’m a huge fan of Patricia Highsmith’s work and the #Ripley books. I didn’t think the film could be bettered but, my word, this @netflix series is incredible. Beautifully shot and Andrew Scott is just magnificent in the titular role. An absolutely stunning production,’ wrote Chelle Belle on X.

Exciting. #Ripley on Netflix is great so far. Much closer to the spirit of Highsmith than the film with Jude Law and Matt Damon. More grim and squalid and menacing.

Half time break. Watching Ripley: a little slow to start but now? Totally hooked.
Mesmerising Andrew Scott plays Tom Ripley – a much darker even more flawed grifter than Matt Damon’s ‘Tom’ in the Ripley film.
Love it’s shot in B&W. Am totally engrossed. @netflix #Ripley pic.twitter.com/qzowrep1fd— Melissa Hoyer (@melissahoyer) April 5, 2024
I think Tom #Ripley would be one of my fantasy dinner party guests (as long as there were witnesses). Andrew Scott’s version is for me the best yet. pic.twitter.com/wrZNK9pQeW

Emily Thomas thought it stayed more loyal to the original source material than the film. ‘More grim and squalid and menacing,’ she explained. Mellisa Hoyer agreed with the sentiment and added: ‘Love it’s shot in B&W. Am totally engrossed.’
‘Andrew Scott’s version is for me the best yet,’ wrote Reverend Richard Coles.
The adaptation, shot in black and white, is ‘vastly different’ to the film, says Andrew, 47.
‘I absolutely adore the film, it had a huge influence on me. But this is a vastly different version of it,’ he told ET.
‘It’s completely different and so I think as soon as people start watching it they’ll go, “Oh, this is a completely different thing”.’
