Netflix viewers have targeted a ‘crash out’ character in the upcoming series The Gentlemen.
The eight-part series, a spinoff of Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name, stars Theo James from The White Lotus as Edward Horniman, who suddenly inherits a 15,000-acre estate and the title of Duke of Halstead from his recently deceased father.
However, he quickly discovers that the property has become part of Bobby Glass’s weed-growing empire, and he must now traverse a world of diverse and dangerous personalities while simultaneously attempting to preserve his home and stay alive.
Although viewers have lauded the series as a ’10/10 watch’ and ‘the finest thing I’ve watched on Netflix in a while,’ many have also expressed displeasure with one particular character.
In the programme, Daniel Ings plays Eddie’s untrustworthy, cocaine-addicted elder brother, Frederick ‘Freddy’ Horniman.
Eddie’s problematic decisions begin in the first episode, when he finds that his brother owes £8 million to a dangerous drug dealer.
Despite his attempts to sell his late father’s estate to pay off the debt, he quickly learns about the drug industry.
Then, in an attempt to clean his brother’s record by selling a collection of fine wines and renegotiating the conditions of his criminal bargain, his brother falls into much more problems when he is involved in a murder.
Unsurprisingly, viewers pulled their hair out and made their thoughts clear.
‘Omg I just started The Gentleman and I honestly can’t stand Freddy,’ user J posted on X.
‘Only on episode 2 of The Gentleman and I need someone to do something about Freddy. He’s p***ing me right off. The literal WORST,’ Jennifer shared.
‘I AM STILL ON THE GENTLEMAN EPISODE 1 AND I WANNA WRING FREDDY’S NECK THIS UNGRATEFUL BRAT,’ Claui added.
Someone else posted: ‘Characters like Freddy in The Gentleman tv show make me very angry. I dislike them very much.’
Speaking to GQ about his character, Daniel said ‘being born into that world [of privilege] has allowed him to grow into this grotesque ogre of a man’.
‘There’s that constant sense that the whole family – and even the staff in the house – are always catering towards keeping Freddy in that mode where he just doesn’t have to grow up,’ he said.
The Gentlemen is streaming on Netflix.
