Netflix has revealed that an anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is in the works, with the entire ensemble returning.
That’s correct, original characters will be voiced by Michael Cera, Chris Evans, and Anna Kendrick in the new series, which is based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic books and will be drawn by Science Saru.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead reprises her role as Ramona Flowers, Michael’s character Scott Pilgrim’s love interest in the 2010 comedy.
Scott, a slacker and guitarist in an Indie band called Sex Bob-omb, must battle Ramona’s seven wicked ex-partners to live and continue seeing her in the film.
While all of this is going on, Scott is also courting Knives Chau, portrayed by Ellen Wong from Glow.
The first adaptation was strongly inspired by video games, with characters getting level-ups and scores for defeating foes.
Among those who portrayed villains in the film were Rushmore’s Jason Schwartzman and Captain America’s Chris Evans.
Anna, best known for her roles in Pitch Perfect, Twilight, and Up in the Air, will portray Scott Pilgrim’s sibling Stacey.
Brie Larson, Aubrey Plaza, and Kieran Culkin will all lend their voices to the Netflix cartoon.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright gushed about the news on Twitter on Thursday.
He wrote: ‘This is not a drill! This is happening! After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, I’m thrilled to say one is IMMINENT, with the whole cast back together and… you are going to lose your minds.’
Edgar added: ‘One of the proudest, most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim. Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the gang on an actual project. Until now…’
