Netflix has been chastised for ‘disrespecting’ Liam Hemsworth in its advertisement for The Witcher season 3.
Fans of The Witcher were upset when Henry Cavill, 40, announced he will step down as Geralt of Rivia and be replaced by Hemsworth, 33, for season four.
However, in advertisements broadcast throughout the UK, Netflix has unwittingly hinted that The Witcher won’t be the same without its present leading man, projecting ‘yep, he’s still Geralt in season 3’ in iconic locations such as Battersea Power Station and the Tower of London.
Fans of The Witcher are naturally perplexed.
‘If I was Liam Hemsworth and I saw this I would cry so bad,’ one critic shared on Twitter, while another agreed: ‘I can’t believe this is real, holy s**t A) this has to mean initial watch numbers are bad B) this is absolutely throwing Liam Hemsworth straight under a bus.’
‘This is embarassing as hell,’ fumed someone else. ‘All this does is tell people that s4 is going to suck and you have no faith in your recasting.
‘Makes me feel bad for Liam Hemsworth. He’s in an impossible situation, between fans who don’t want a new Geralt and a show that apparently doesn’t either.’
So many more called the promo ‘tone deaf’ and a ‘bad look’.
‘Season 4 marketing is going to be awkward,’ noted one bewildered fan.
Cavill’s co-star Freya Allan recently stated that she’mourned’ his departure, while Anya Chalotra stated that she was delighted to have been kept in the dark about his leaving when they recorded their final scenes together.
Hemsworth stated that he has been a long-time fan of The Witcher and is ‘overjoyed’ to be taking on the role of Geralt.
‘Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,’ he said.
Continuing the bromance, he wrote: ‘Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character.’
The Witcher is available to stream on Netflix now.
