Warning: spoilers ahead for Moon Knight episode 3 on Disney Plus.
Episode 3 of Marvel’s Moon Knight has featured one of the final performances by the late Gaspard Ulliel after his death, leaving fans emotional as he was introduced as Anton Mogart, aka Midnight Man.
In January this year, the celebrated French actor died at the age of 37 following a skiing accident at La Rosière resort in Savoie, France, dying a day after being hospitalised at the Grenoble University Hospital.
In a statement released at the time, Marvel and Disney said they were ‘deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our friend and colleague Gaspard Ulliel’, adding: ‘Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.’
In the third episode of Marvel series Moon Knight on Disney Plus, Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac) and Layla El-Faouly (May Calamawy) were in search of Senfu’s sarcophagus in Egypt to help them locate the tomb of the goddess Ammit when they crossed paths with Mogart, an avid antiquities collector.
Mogart was left in awe when cult leader Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) displayed the power of Ammit that he possesses in his cane, as well as when Spector transformed into Moon Knight to fight his men before his very eyes.
While Spector appeared to hit Mogart with one of his crescent-shaped knives as Midnight Man rode away on his horse, it’s uncertain whether the character will return in future episodes.
Marvel fans expressed how much it ‘hurt’ to see Ulliel appear on screen, as well as a tribute to him at the end of the episode.
‘Man… first shot of him and it already hurts. Rest In Peace, Gaspard Ulliel,’ one person tweeted.
‘I still can’t believe he’s gone,’ someone else said, while another wrote: ‘Rest in peace, sweetheart.’
Someone else tweeted: ‘Oh god I didn’t expect to see Gaspard Ulliel this early. May he rest in peace.’
‘Gaspard Ulliel is giving a great performance, so sad that he’s no longer with us,’ one person said.
Some of Ulliel’s best-known roles included playing a young Hannibal Lecter in the 2007 film Hannibal Rising, as well as Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 film about the fashion designer.
He was also known for starring in Chanel’s Bleu de Chanel campaigns, and in 2017 he won the César Award for best actor for his performance in It’s Only the End of the World.
The actor was survived by his partner, model-singer Gaëlle Piétri, and six-year-old son.
Moon Knight is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
