A MasterChef: The Professionals participant was forced to flee the kitchen due to a blender explosion that spat out boiling hot bisque.
Cristina Maia, 51, was engaged in a horrific accident on Tuesday night’s episodes, which left her with damage to her arms and face.
The Brazilian cook had been creating a turmeric, ginger, and chilli bisque when the blender erupted all over her and coated her in boiling liquid.
Cristina appeared to be in pain as she continued to apologise as judge Gregg Wallace yelled at ‘woah’.
‘Is that red hot? Get it under some cold water please,’ Gregg said, rushing to action.
A medical practitioner then recommended Cristina to maintain a cold compress on her chin, where the bisque had sprayed her when it exploded from the blender.
‘I don’t think you should carry on, you’re hurt, so we’re going to stop,’ Gregg told her, as a clip of Cristina leaving to get medical help aired.
The judges were subsequently left discussing the situation and expressing their condolences to Cristina.
‘Accidents happen,’ Gregg said, with his co-judge Monica Galetti adding: ‘I was looking forward to trying her Brazilian cuisine today.’
Monica, 46, made a surprising comeback to the programme this year after announcing her departure following the cancer diagnosis of her nephew Otis.
She explained at the time that she had to make the difficult decision for her own mental health because she had been a judge on the show for 14 years.
Appearing on The One Show, she said: ‘I’ve only been able to commit time to the show – it’s three months -when my team are strong and I can have the balance of family, the restaurant and all my other commitments.
‘When I’m filming people don’t realise I do a 12-hour day of filming and then I would get back to the restaurant in the evening.
‘At the moment things are out of sync – things are tough at the moment. I’m trying to spend time with my family, I have an ill nephew who I try to get back to see and filming was starting at the same time.’
Monica mentioned that she was walking to her kitchen straight after the interview when she noticed things were getting too much for her.
She continued: ‘I’m short at the restaurant, I mean straight after this I’m back in my kitchen. I just found I could not manage the balance this time.
‘Something had to give for my own mental health, it was just getting very dark…Sometimes you just can’t do it all.’
She later confirmed the news she was returning, writing on Instagram: ‘A year ago I made the tough call to take a break from Masterchef The Professionals.
‘I’m so grateful for everyone’s support that allowed me time out to get back on top of managing business and family commitments.
‘I’m delighted to say that I am able to come back to MasterChef: The Professionals this year and I’m super thrilled to see what new talent is out there & to be back with my buddies @greggawallace and @marcuswareing – link to enter is on the @masterchefuk profile – see you there!’
MasterChef: The Professionals airs on BBC One.
