Warning: spoilers ahead for Secret Invasion episode 1.
The first episode of Secret Invasion opens with Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) back in action after meeting with old comrades and battling new opponents.
In the new Marvel series, starring Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Cobie Smulders, modern-day Earth is threatened by an extreme gang of Skrulls, an extraterrestrial species who can turn into anybody.
Some Skrulls, like as Talos (Ben), remain devoted to Nick and his allies, notably Maria Hill (Cobie).
Others, however, have grown disillusioned with him, especially the extreme group’s youthful leader, Gravik (Kingsley), who is upset that the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. failed to keep his pledge to help them locate a planet to call their own.
There’s a lot of backstory to parse in the years since the Skrulls were first revealed in the 2019 film Captain Marvel, with episode one ending with the heartbreaking loss of a veteran MCU character.
Nick Fury returns to Earth as extremist Skrulls cause havoc
Trouble has been developing down below while Nick Fury has been gone from Earth in orbit.
A series of terrorist incidents have been carried out throughout the globe, and while some may believe they are unrelated, it turns out that they are the work of extreme Skrulls who are dissatisfied with their lack of a permanent home.
When Nick returns from his stay on the space station, he is reunited with Talos as well as his trusty ally Maria Hill, who looks to be irritated that the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been gone for so long.
Will Nick be able to clear up the mess that has accumulated while he has been away?
Tension lingers between Talos and daughter G’iah
Viewers were first introduced to Talos’ daughter G’iah, who was only a kid, in the 2019 film Captain Marvel. G’iah has grown up and is disillusioned with her father’s belief in Fury, siding with Gravik and assisting in the attacks on Earth.
G’iah is shown welcoming a refugee Skrull to their shelter, offering him courtesy and explaining that he may either stay at the base behind its gates or depart the perimeters in human form if he chose to join them as a fighter.
The warriors not only assume human forms, but also their memories, inhabiting them from the inside out while the genuine people are imprisoned.
Later, Talos pursues G’iah while she’s on a bomb supply run, eventually catching up with her and revealing that not only did her mother die, but that her death was caused by the guy she’s now working for.
G’iah, having reconsidered her priorities, informs Talos about Gravik’s next planned strike in Russia. As a result, a double agent is created.
Olivia Colman and Kingsley Ben-Adir make scene-stealing turns
The debut of numerous newcomers to the MCU in Secret Invasion has been much anticipated, including Emilia, Olivia, and Kingsley, all of whom provide great performances in the first episode.
Olivia’s MI6 agent Sonya appears to be a highly devious former ally of Nick’s, one whom he knows he cannot fully trust, whilst Kingsley’s Gravik appears to have no qualms about murdering any human life that stand in the way of his ambitions.
Nick realises that Sonya isn’t telling him everything she knows about the supplies taken in Kazakhstan, so he secretly bugs her room with a camera.
Meanwhile, amid the Russian bombing raid, Gravik comes face to face with Nick… Instead of killing him outright, he has the seasoned spy suffer by witnessing the murder of a close comrade.
Their bond feels incredibly intimate, and it will undoubtedly be explored further in future episodes.
Ending explained as Agent Maria Hill is brutally murdered
Cobie debuted as Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers more than a decade ago, a character she has revisited in films such as Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Given her presence in the Secret Invasion advertising materials, one would think she’d make it through at least the first episode of the series.
However, she is murdered during the Russian onslaught – and to make matters worse, she is shot by Gravik imitating Nick, thus in one of her dying moments, she may have believed that her old buddy was the one who fired the shot.
While there was a glimmer of hope that she was an unknown Skrull posing as Maria, the sight of her scarlet blood flowing out of her made it evident that this was the tragic end for a long-running MCU character.
One fan tweeted in reaction to the fateful moment: ‘THE ENDING??? WHAT?’
Another responded in shock: ‘BRO WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL JUST HAPPENED.’
Meanwhile, someone else wrote: ‘Was just gonna tweet about how happy I was that Maria was finally getting her well deserved screentime and how I loved her so much…’
Secret Invasion is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
