Martin Lewis unbuttoned his shirt for the first time on live television, but assured viewers it was for a good cause.
On Thursday morning, while co-hosting Good Morning Britain with Kate Garraway, the Money Saving Expert used his body to demonstrate ‘life-saving haemorrhage control devices’ during one segment.
Martin began discussing the ‘devastating’ effects of knife crime by stating, “It’s completely destructive to people’s lives.”
Martin then began unbuttoning the shirt of Carl Scott, a former gang member who witnessed the dangers of knife crime firsthand after being stabbed and having his closest friend expire in his arms from his injuries.
The 51-year-old said: ‘Let’s demonstrate how it works. Do you need a dummy? That would be me.’
Carl explained, opening the kit: ‘If someone was to have a chest wound or a stomach wound, this would be then be implemented over the top of that wound.’ A lot of air could go into that wound which could then get trapped, so when you implement this on the wound itself…’
Unbuttoning his shirt, Martin added: ‘I’ve never unbuttoned my shirt on television before, but there we go there’s a first time for everything.
‘It’s for a good cause.’
‘That’s all I’m doing,’ he added, after unbuttoning his top two buttons, giving Carl enough space to demonstrate how the bleed kit could be applied.
As the segment progressed, Carl discussed promoting awareness about how to use the supplies, based on his own experiences.
He said: ‘I’ve been stabbed three times.’
He went on to describe how ‘devastating’ it was at the time, before Carl stated that being wounded was a ‘badge of honour’ when he was a child.
‘That’s part of the problem, isn’t it really,’ Martin replied.
‘It’s part of the environment I was in at the time,’ Carl said, adding that now as an adult he has been more effected and he gets quite ‘upset’.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
