Thank goodness Channel 4’s Apprentice-style reality programme Make Me Prime Minister isn’t how they’re produced, because it’s been scrapped.
It’s a comfort, until you realise that our existing system has devoured four legitimate Prime Ministers in five years, one of whom, Liz Truss, lasted less time than it takes a cabbage to rot.
But it wasn’t meant to be for Alastair Campbell, who also hosts the renowned podcast The Rest is Politics and is best known as Tony Blair’s erstwhile spin doctor.
The former Labour Prime Minister even appeared briefly on the show.
House of Lords member Baroness Sayeeda Warsi also co-hosted the game show, which saw competitors battle it out to be made Channel 4’s ‘alternative Prime Minister’.
During the course of six episodes, 12 ambitious British people were given prime ministerial responsibilities.
Rather than riding on the momentum of the political hiatus of the time, many just branded the show a ‘Apprentice rip off’.
While The Guardian gave the show five stars, just eight people have voted on Rotten Tomatoes, and the consensus is a paltry one – ouch.
The Sun now reports that it will not return for a second season.
A source told the paper: ‘There was a sense that after having three prime ministers in just five weeks, the country had had enough jostling to reach the top of the greasy pole.
‘With a concept that had never been seen before, the programme was always something of a TV experiment which could have been a success or a flop.’
They added: ‘But trailblazing Channel 4 are never afraid to risk failure and try out a new idea.’
Competitors were Gemma Collins, Holly Morgan, a sports agent, and Jackie Weaver, the pandemic social media star from the infamous village council Zoom call.
Shortly as the episode aired, Boris Johnson resigned to make room for Truss and her wicked mini-budget, who was replaced within 45 days by current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak…
Bring the show back as soon as possible!
