Andy Serkis has revealed that getting his entire body waxed was one of the most excruciating experiences of his life.
The actor, who is now playing as the ruthless tech millionaire David Robey in the upcoming film Luther: The Fallen Sun, recounted the agonising moment while appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, revealing how the situation deteriorated from bad to worse at the time.
The Lord of the Rings actor recalls having to undergo a physical metamorphosis to play Ian Drury in the 2010 movie Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll, having contracted polio as a youngster and having to exercise one side of his body.
Another element of Ian’s look that Andy had to consider was that he “had no hair on his body,” as he said on the ITV chat programme.
‘He had no hair on his body, so I did have my whole body waxed, which is literally the most painful thing anyone’s ever done to me,’ the 58-year-old said.
While receiving a full-body wax was always going to be unpleasant, Andy explained that it was made considerably worse because the woman who performed his treatment had never done it before.
‘The girl who was doing it to me – bless her – it was her first time. She didn’t quite heat the wax up enough,’ he said.
When Andy went to get his chest waxed, he remembered how the beautician had her foot pushed up on the bed while she tried to tear his hair out.
‘I was practically passing out,’ the Andor star stated, adding that he had his entire body waxed in only one session.
‘I was purple from head to toe. A shiny aubergine,’ he quipped.
Andy’s face is obscured in some of his most renowned parts, including Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars films, and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes films.
In Luther: The Fallen Sun, he appears as the deadly David Robey.
He recently stated on Good Morning Britain that he almost didn’t take the gig.
‘When I first read the script, I had to have a shower, it was one of the darkest parts I’ve ever been offered,’ he said.
‘I did almost consider not doing it, because what’s brilliant about Neil Cross and the writing, is he makes the villains in Luther very, very real and around-the-corner, under-the-bed, it’s in our lives.’
The Jonathan Ross Show returns next Saturday on ITV.
