Lorraine Kelly’s talk show was taken off air mid-way through Thursday’s episode after it was announced that Boris Johnson would be resigning ‘imminently’.
The presenter had just begun an interview with JLS star Aston Merrygold when news came in that they would be cutting to ITV News live to cover the Prime Minister’s imminent resignation.
It comes after over 50 members of Mr Johnson’s cabinet resigned, leading to increased pressure for him to also step down from his post.
Earlier in Lorraine’s show, a psychic pig had predicted that Mr Johnson would no longer be Prime Minister very soon.
The stunt had been chosen after Mr Johnson had been compared to a ‘greased piglet’ for being able to slide out of every scandal that has come his way in recent months.
News of his impending resignation meant ITV cut from Lorraine to broadcast live from outside Downing Street in preparation for an announcement from the Prime Minister.
She apologised to Aston, who was on the show to promote his new single, his first solo song in five years.
Aston had been less than two minutes in to his interview on Lorraine as she cut the chat short, saying: ‘Now, I tell you what, we’ve got more on that news from Westminster.
‘We’re going to hand you over to ITV News with all of the breaking news about the imminent resignation of Boris Johnson.’
Turning to Aston, Lorraine added: ‘So very sorry about that, you need to come back!’
Aston responded: ‘I do! But it’s exciting so it’s fine.’
Mass resignations in Westminster began when Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid announced their resignations, leading to calls for the Prime Minister to step down.
Despite the disruption to Lorraine, it was later announced that Mr Johnson would likely make his address at lunchtime, so This Morning was able to air as planned.
