Lorraine Kelly made a mistake on her Thursday morning talk show when she kept calling singer Sam Smith the wrong gender.
The ITV host, who is 63 years old, was talking to Vogue Williams, who is 37, about the Barbie movie’s pink carpet fashion when she accidentally called the non-binary hitmaker a man.
On Wednesday night, the stars of the Barbie movie came to London for the European opening. This made Leicester Square a hot spot for Barbie fans.
Lorraine asked Vogue to give her a fashion recap after a star-studded night where Margot Robbie and Ryan Reynolds showed off their clothes in front of fans.
Sam came up in their talk as they decided to ignore the movie’s main theme and wear a huge outfit instead of pink.
The singer, who is on the movie’s official soundtrack record, showed up in big blue flared jeans and a big navy crew-neck sweater.
They identify as non-binary, so they use they/them pronouns. Lorraine forgot this when she talked about how they looked after the event.
The long-time daytime TV host said: ‘It’s a bit big for him. If he was my son, I’d be saying, “Son, that’s too big for you.”… He’s going to stand out. He knows what he’s doing, does that fella.’
After she accidentally called the star the wrong gender, people took to Twitter to talk about what they had just seen.
One penned: ‘@reallorraine VERY lazy journalism not addressing Sam Smith with they/them pronouns… come on – seriously!! #Lorraine [sic].’
Another said: ‘Sam Smith being one of the most well known non binary people … #Lorraine using ‘he, his, son, man, fella’ – literally as many male pronouns as she could fit in in a 2 min segment. She knew exactly what she was doing! [sic].’
‘@lorraine @itv Oops another clanger naughty Lorraine… calling Sam Smith a fella [sic],’ a separate account noted after the star’s on air blunder.
While a viewer further added: ‘Not Lorraine misgendering Sam Smith over and over!! She’s normally pretty good with this stuff.
‘Vogue looked visibly uncomfortable!!! And she seemed to be emphasising THEY too for Lorraine to pick up on it but it didn’t work!! I’m sure she’ll be upset she got it wrong #Lorraine [sic].’
In response to the online backlash, the TV star tweeted: ‘Fair comment Ollie. Not in the least intentional but will take on board – thanks for bringing to my attention [sic].’
