Lorraine Kelly has appeared to take a U-turn on whether the government should cancel Christmas amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Last month, the ITV host aired her frustrations on Good Morning Britain, where she called for the government to ‘do the right thing’ and axe Christmas.
However, just one month on, Lorraine seems to have changed her mind as she told Dr Hilary Jones on Monday’s show that she doesn’t think it should be cancelled.
The host was discussing the results of a poll the show had done, where they asked viewers at home whether they thought the festive season should be cancelled or not.
It was a close call, but 59% of viewers were for Christmas being cancelled, while 41% were against it being axed.
‘Now look, concerns over the relaxation of the restrictions over Christmas as we know,’ Lorraine began.
‘We did a poll about this about whether or not we should effectively cancel Christmas, very divided, 59% of you said “Yes, we should” 41% “No”.
‘I don’t think we should cancel Christmas, nobody wants to do that but I just keep saying “Just scale it down, be sensible”.’
Weighing in on the discussion Dr Hilary said: ‘We have always said haven’t we, that this should be a different Christmas to the ones we are used to.
‘We have only got to look at the prevalence of this virus, it’s still just as transmissible as it has always been.’
‘We are seeing ITU in many hospitals in England right now full of Covid patients, so we are back to where we were before,’ he added.
Later on, in the show Lorraine went on to reiterate: ‘I don’t think it should be cancelled altogether, just scaled back a bit.’
Earlier this month Boris Johnson put the majority of the UK into a tier two or tier three lockdown.
The Prime Minister revealed that three households will be able to mix for five days at Christmas time after the leaders of the UK’s four nations agreed a festive deal.
The relaxation of coronavirus restrictions will come between December 23 and 27, allowing relatives to celebrate Christmas together at home.
Lorraine airs daily at 9am on ITV.
