Lord Alan Sugar has stated that he was ‘worried’ about one of the candidates on the 2024 season of The Apprentice after learning about their background before to the programme.
Last night, the BBC show resumed for series 18, exposing viewers to a new group of entrepreneurs attempting to persuade the business magnate to give them a £250,000 investment.
Tre Lowe, one of the candidates, rose to prominence in the 1990s as a member of the garage music group Architechs, whose smash single Body Groove debuted in 2000.
Lord Sugar had doubts about Tre’s ability after discovering his music past.
When Tre – also known as Paul Akabah – was originally introduced as one of The Apprentice’s stars, he spoke about his band, which he created with his brother Ashley Akabah.
‘Though my brother is no longer alive – the music we made in this partnership certainly is and will impact future generations too,’ he said at the time.
Lord Sugar, 76, found out about Tre’s past career when he was going through his resume, ahead of the start of the 2024 series.
‘I was aware from the CV that I read before he started, and I worried a little bit about what’s he doing on the show?’ the business magnate confessed.
However, he soon realised that Tre, 48, was putting forward a viable business proposal, which the contestant believes will ‘create a legacy that reverberates through time’.
Lord Sugar continued: ‘He seriously was there to try to promote his wellness products.
‘So I was a little bit sceptical, but he turned out to be a very, very nice fellow, first of all, let me say that, and one of the credible candidates. Very sensible.’
So, has Lord Sugar had the opportunity to listen to Body Groove?
‘No, I’m afraid I passed on that one,’ The Apprentice star quipped.
Body Groove, released 24 years ago, contains vocals by Nay Nay and reached number three on the UK Singles Chart.
The original music video for the tune has had 404,000 views on YouTube, while the song has been listened over 32.4 million times on Spotify.
In 2020, artist Dizzee Rascal released the song Body Loose with Ella Eyre, which sampled Body Groove and has a million views on YouTube and millions of listens on the music site.
Tre revealed that owing to acute tinnitus, he had to give up DJing, which flipped his career upside down.
‘I decided to monetise something else I loved – working out,’ he recollected.
‘I created a personal training and wellbeing business. I got my level three PT qualification, where it quickly dawned on me that in the world of personal training, PTs I spoke to were far more interested in poaching clients, than being part of a brand.’
He added that he’s ‘different’ to other candidates in the process, being ‘slightly older’ and ‘from a creative background’.
‘I have proven success, and I am utterly passionate about impacting people’s lives. I believe this is a proven formula for massive success,’ he added.
The Apprentice returns next Thursday at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
