Kris Marshall, star of Beyond Paradise, has confessed he is no longer ‘bothered’ by negative reviews from reviewers.
The 50-year-old actor is most known for his work in films and television programmes such as My Family, Love Actually, and The Merchant of Venice.
He then played DI Humphrey Goodman in Death in Paradise from 2014 to 2017, returning last year in the spin-off series Beyond Paradise.
Although some of his previous ventures received negative comments, Kris has recently stated that the show’s ratings success when it first aired a year ago was a’real confirmation of the character and people’s enjoyment of it’.
Beyond Paradise, the BBC’s largest new drama of 2023, with over nine million viewers in its first 30 days.
Although Kris stated that he has always wanted reviewers to respond positively to his work, the feedback of viewers is now more crucial.
‘I have a theory – not a theory, actually, it’s a fact – that to make a show like Death in Paradise or Beyond Paradise, that has a broad demographic, that you can sit down and watch with your kids, that bonds all family members in the room, is incredibly hard to do,’ he said.
‘And to have people scorn it… I’m fine with it now but it bothered me a bit in the past. These shows are hard to make and they bring people together – that’s got to be lauded a little bit, right?’ he added when speaking to Radio Times.
Despite viewers flocking to the spin-off, one of the show’s more harsh reviewsslammed it for being so-called ‘lazy TV’, while another said the main character was given lines that ‘weren’t particularly funny’.
However, after proving popular with viewers, DI Goodman was chosen to appear in the spin-off because producers thought people wanted to know what happened to him and fiancée Martha (Sally Bretton).
Following his departure from Saint Marie to live with his girlfriend, Beyond Paradise follows the now-engaged pair as they relocate to her hometown of Shipton Abbott, on the Devon coast.
Shortly after arriving, he joins the small local police department, where he instantly makes an impression on the officers and introduces a whole new style to police work.
Beyond Paradise returns on March 22 on the BBC.
