Kathy Burke had a high point. Kathy Burke’s reaction to a new poster for the film Gimme Gimme Gimme.
From 1991 until 2001, the BBC slapstick sitcom followed deluded Linda La Hughes (Burke) and her homosexual housemate Tom (James Dreyfus), both of whom were comically rude.
It was one of the most daring (and finest) sitcoms of the 1990s, so many of us are salivating at the prospect of a revival.
One fan went to great measures to create a Gimme Gimme Gimme poster that, to their credit, appears real, depicting Linda on a motorbike with her distinctive ginger hair flying in the breeze and the statement, ‘The most beautiful woman in the world is back.’
Unfortunately, we can only dream.
Kathy shared the image on Twitter along with some heartbreaking news.
‘Good morning, twits,’ she wrote. ‘This is all over my notifications.
‘It’s a fabulous mock up but it’s fake.
‘We have no intention whatsoever of reviving the show in any way shape or form so get the f**k over it, guy and have a lovely day.’
Understandably, everyone was gutted. ‘Aww I just got excited and disappointed in a split second,’ replied one of her followers while others said their Tuesday had been ‘ruined’.
Kathy announced her retirement from acting for good in 2022, citing “boredom” with the industry.
She has, however, established herself as a brilliant documentary-maker with a series of programmes on Channel 4 that, if you haven’t watched them yet, you should start with Growing Up. It’s top notch.
Gimme Gimme Gimme is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
